MI 305 — Assignment: Policy / Economic Analysis
As noted in the syllabus, the third assignment for the course is to analyze an important policy
or economic issues currently being addressed by a specific media, communication, or
information sector. Most likely you will want to analyze an issue that you identified in your
market analysis (that was part 2). However, you are free to choose another issue.
This assignment is divided into two parts. In Part 1 you are to identify and define the issue you
have selected; in Part 2 you will describe possible solutions to the issue.
Part 1: Analysis of any economic or policy issue must start with an accurate and comprehensive
description of the issue. That means identifying precisely what the issue is, its significance to
the industry or companies affected, what factors are involved, and so forth. Because of the
importance of this part of the assignment, it will be worth 180 points. Word count for Part 1
should be between 550 and 700 words, not counting headings or references.
Part 2: The second part of the assignment, in which you describe possible solutions, will be
worth 120 points. In this part, you should describe at least one and as many as three
recommended solutions to the issue defined in Part 1. For each recommended solution, you
should explain why and/or how this would solve the issue—being sure to address the
implications for all affected parties. Word count for Part 2 should be 500 to 650 words (again,
not counting headings or references).
Be sure to include in-text citations as appropriate as well as a works cited page at the end of
your assignment parts (both 1 and 2). Remember that failure to do so will be considered
plagiarism and will cause you to earn a zero for the assignment and fail the course. You can use
any major citation style (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard).
Part 1 is due Sunday, November 12 (by 11:59 pm); the deadline for Part 2 is due two weeks
later, Sunday, November 26 (also by 11:59 pm). You should include Part 1 with your Part 2
submission, so that we can refer back to your description of the issue in evaluating your
solution/s.
We will be grading this assignment based on the quality of your analysis, including how well you
have applied relevant terms and concepts from the course.
Feel free to discuss this assignment in the D2L Discussion Board. (We will try to respond to
specific questions in a timely manner, but please do not wait until the last minute to ask.)
