Focus on a specific text from the conversation, identify its purpose, and make a clear
argument regarding whether the author achieves the purpose. In the body of the paper, work
to prove your argument by analyzing the author’s rhetorical choices and use of the rhetorical
appeals and other rhetorical strategies. Address how the text that is your main focus fits into the
conversation and in what way, if any, the other texts from the conversation influence the ability
of the author to effectively persuade the audience. This paper is part of a portfolio, so be sure to
address the other document in your portfolio, the PowerPoint, by analyzing the visuals from your
PowerPoint. Be sure to analyze a minimum of 2 of these visuals and/or videos, explaining
how the images help the author achieve their purpose and/or how these images give
audiences greater insight to the rhetorical situation. When referencing the images in the
paper, be sure to note where readers can locate each image by identifying the appropriate slide.
PURPOSE
The goal of this assignment is to determine how authors construct texts in order to achieve the
purpose of reaching a specific audience. This can help students learn to utilize rhetorical
strategies when developing their own arguments.
AUDIENCE
A group of well-educated readers who expect solid, professional, academic writing and who are
familiar enough with your texts that you do not need to summarize much.
REQUIREMENTS
1. 1000-1250 words (50 words below or above the requirement is acceptable. No penalty for
going over unless the paper contains unnecessary information, i.e. filler. Potentially very severe
penalty for papers under 1000 words).
2. MLA Format (12 pt., Times New Roman font; double-spaced; 1 in. margins)
3. No secondary sources are required but a Works Cited page with an entry for the texts you
choose to analyze and appropriate in-text citations are required (See Purdue OWL MLA for
