Research Paper Proposal
Prior to the American Civil War and the ratification of the U.S. constitution, slavery
was an ordinary every-day characteristic of the American society. Slavery originated in
America back in Virginia 1619 when the first African slaves were brought to North America
to operate the production of crops like tobacco and cotton. The inhumane hardships slaves
had endured led to the passing by Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratification on December
6, 1865, the 13th amendment which abolished slavery in the United States. Although slavery had
finally been put an end to, there were still socioeconomic tensions present between whites and
black as African American’s had remained second class citizens particularly in the Jim Crow
South.
Throughout the story, A Confederacy of Dunces, there is an underlying theme of racial
injustice which is well portrayed throughout Toole’s text. The theme is first introduced in the
scene where Burma Jones, a young black man, has been arrested for stealing although there had
been no evidence linking Jones to the crime. After being released from jail, Jones must find
employment to avoid imprisonment because police are eager to arrest any black man who is
unemployed. As a result of socio-economic exploitation, Jones is left helpless but to take a job that paid
well below minimum wage, and face the hardships African Americans had experienced as
employees in the Jim Crow South. “I’m workin’ in modern slavery. If I quit, I get report for being
vagran'” (6.17). The topic for this research paper is modern slavery, and how it is represented in the story, A
Confederacy of Dunces. To further delve the reader on the topic for this paper, there will be an emphasis of
research on incarceration statistics, and socio-economic barriers African Americans had faced in the Jim
Crow South.
