Final Project Proposal Template
Clinical Mental Health Counseling Theory, Technique, or Intervention
In this section you will identify what theory, technique, or intervention you intend to
research for your final project. Examples could include Dialectical Behavior Therapy,
Psychoeducational Group Therapy or Multicultural Theory. You should give a very brief
description of the chosen theory, technique, or intervention.
Clinical Population
In this section you should describe which clinical population the chosen theory,
technique, or intervention would be applied to. It should be a group you are interested in
working with clinically and include the gender, age range, and diagnosis or identifying factors
you are looking for. An examples would be adult women diagnosed with Borderline Personality
Disorder with suicidal ideation. In a sentence or two, explain your interest in this population.
Research Question
In this section, you will write a research question which poses what you want to know
about the application of your chosen technique with your chosen population. It should be one
sentence in the form of a question and include the intervention you named above and the clinical
population. Here is an example: How effective is Dialectical Behavior Group Therapy in
reducing the frequency of suicidal ideation in adult women diagnosed with Borderline
Personality Disorder?
Evidence of Existing Literature
In this section, you will explore three different databases and identify one peer reviewed
article from each source. You will describe how you conducted your search and where you
located the article followed by an APA citation. For example: I initiated my search for existing
literature related to the use of Dialectical Behavior Theory within the Walden library, I searched
the PsychINFO database, limiting my search to full text articles in the last 10 years and identified
the following source:
Coles, K. N., & Smith, A. E. (2015). A very good article. Archives of Good Articles, 161(1),
78–88. )
The second database that I opted to explore was Ebscohost. Again, I limited my search to
full text articles within the last 10 years. During this search, I utilized Boolean search specifiers
and searched for Dialectical Behavior Theory “and” women, and “not” men. I identified the
following article:
Smith, L. (2017). Another article that works for my project. Journal of Clinical Articles, 23(2),
88-89.
You will follow that citation with your third database and the citation that you choose.
Critical Evaluation of Sources:
The final section is very important. You should critically evaluate each of the three
articles that you identified article for quality and applicability to the problem at hand. For
example, you can describe how you know the information is scholarly and provides important
clinical information.
For each article you should include such details as whether it is current, whether it is
from a peer reviewed counseling journal and why that is important. You can also describe
whether the information contained in the article is related specifically to the counseling
profession or whether the research was conducted in a related discipline such as social work or
psychology.
Finally, you need to describe whether the research was clinical in nature or whether it
was an analysis of existing research. Remember that your goal in learning to critically analyze
research articles is to learn how to identify quality research that you can use to write treatment
plans, identity interventions for use with clients, and conduct evidence based practice.
