discourse analysis essay

A good discourse analysis essay will have: A clear, informative and specific title that avoids “generic” language (i.e. your title should probably not be “Discourse Analysis of Globalization”). An introduction that presents the central problem/issue/stakes to the reader, with a clear thesis statement showing what you will discuss. An excellent introduction will include a good “hook” for the reader. Good organization and structuring of ideas throughout the essay and good flow between ideas. If you choose to use subheadings, they should be specific and descriptive of the section that follows in order to strategically to guide the reader. The focus of the essay should remain clear to the reader throughout the essay, and all paragraphs should support/engage the central thesis. Explanation/definition of the concept of discourse, so that it is clear how you are deploying this term, and the reader knows why it is matters to your discussion of the selected topic. Thorough analysis of news article and effective use of two scholarly sources. Explanation of the discourse the texts reveal, with good use of supporting evidence. Discussion across academic and popular news articles, using comparison and careful analysis of language, etc. in order to examine discourse and consider its diffusion across multiple media. Remember, a single article cannot “produce” discourse but rather draws from, reproduces and contributes to what appear to be “common sense” understandings of a particular topic/issue. Consideration of the contradictions and contestations surrounding and included within this discourse; presentation of some of the “stakes” of struggles over and within discourse. Background information/historical context that helps reveal or show the roots of the(se) discourse(s). Consideration of the larger implications of the(se) discourse(s). Why does this discourse matter, and to/for whom? What might be some of the effects of the prevalence of this discourse? What are the political stakes? Obvious ties to and engagement with lecture material and course content of GEOG 123. An impactful conclusion that not only summarizes the rest of the essay, but points to the important take-away of your analysis.

GEOG 123/JSIS 123 – Introduction to Globalization
Autumn 2017
Discourse Analysis Essay
Due: Sunday, December 3 by 11:59pm via Canvas
For this assignment, you will be critically analyzing and discussing a recent news
article related to any of the structures and processes of globalization that we have covered in
class. The article you select should be a substantive piece of reporting rather than a generic
news brief, and should come from a reputable source in the popular press. This could be a
newspaper like the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, or the Washington Post; a news
magazine like the Economist, the Atlantic, or the New Yorker; or a reputable online news source.
Use the UW Libraries’ online guides below to evaluate news sources and/or consult your TA
if you are unsure whether a particular article is appropriate for this assignment:
The assignment has two primary aims. The first is to identify the relevant discourses
and narratives about globalization that are represented in the news article and discuss the way
in which they connect to, support, contradict, or challenge dominant perspectives on
globalization that we have discussed in class. Make sure to discuss both the material
phenomena (events, people, places, institutions, systems) that your article is about and the
relevant discourses that are represented. To what extent does your news article align with or
contradict the textbook or other course materials? Cite the textbook and other course readings
as needed to support your claims.
The second aim is to compare the way that your news article discusses globalization
with the way the same topic is treated in scholarly publications. For this second goal, you will
need to cite and discuss a minimum of two peer-reviewed, scholarly articles related to the
topic of your news article that have been published within the past ten years. If your news
article references an academic study, it is highly recommended that you locate the article in
question and compare the way its findings are represented in the popular press with the
academic article itself. Consider the claims that are made, the evidence that is used, and the
taken-for-granted assumptions that are present in your popular and scholarly sources.
Remember, the purpose of this assignment is NOT to summarize your sources, but
rather to provide a critical analysis connecting your news and scholarly sources to material we
have covered in class. You have a great deal of flexibility in your choice of topic for this
assignment, but you must be able to clearly show its relationship to the course content.
You must provide complete, properly formatted in-text and bibliographic citations for
all sources that you reference.
