Question 1: Week 5 Electronic Reserve Readings (GIGO & AI)
There is a term in computer technology called GIGO or Garbage In, Garbage Out. This means
humans define (program) what a computer knows or associates a term with. So, if an inaccuracy
term is programmed in the computer code then the program does not know any better.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) developers are working on teaching a computer to learn and then make
decisions, but that is beyond most computer program today. However, some levels of this AI are
thought to be in used as part of Amazon and Netflix recommendations of books or movies a
customer may find interesting.
Has anyone run into this type of AI, do you think it is on the mark?
Question 2: Chapter 12: “Object-Oriented (OO)”
One systems development approach that allows for re-use to shorten development time is “objectoriented (OO)”. An OO approach uses “encapsulation and information hiding” providing a method to
join processes and data into objects, this gives a “black-box approach” to the user. This allows users
to execute a command for example “metric conversion component” without needing to understand
the conversion calculation as an example. This metric conversion can be used multiple times by
different applications.
Think about this in a non-computer way…in your daily function is there a key common
routine or function that can be defined as an “object” that can be used by other members of
your organization or group? This function would be reused several times, thus eliminating redevelopment. That is the concept of using an object orient approach. Can you think of any
related examples in your experience?
