your research. So first, read over all of these.
There are no webcasts this week because I would like you to spend the
bulk of your time conducting your observational research.
Next, with the avatar you created last week, spend a minimum of three
hours in Second Life touring around, or staying in one spot, whatever
you prefer, observing the culture and writing field notes about your
experience. It is a good idea to pick a smaller area (such as a museum,
art gallery, dance club etc.) that you are interested in and that you can
focus on in terms of anthropology. The webcast on how to write field
notes (last week) explains in detail what to write about and what field
notes should look like etc.
Your discussion assignment for this week is to write 200 words about
the most fascinating aspect of Second Life culture you observed, and
another 200 words about the most mundane aspect of Second Life
culture, from your personal perspective as an anthropologist/avatar.
Following your initial post you are required to respond to a minimum of
two other student’s posts for this week.

to write about links between the Wilson- Flicker chapter and digital
stories on a website named, CCASA Digital Storytelling

stories about sexual abuse, and I would like you to choose one after
watching a few. In a 200-300-word post compare the results of Wilson
and Flicker’s study in the Jane-Finch area with your chosen digital story
in terms of issues related to empowerment, identity and
community. Also, I want you think about this question: Do you think the
women in Wilson and Flicker’s study would have taken the same photos
and told the same narratives, if they knew they would be turned into
digital stories for an international audience?
Secondly, after reading through Darcy Alexandra’s chapter, I would like
you to watch all of the videos on her
website These stories are the outcome of a research project
conducted with refugees and immigrants who migrated to Ireland. Ideas
around truth and sharing play an important role in this project. I would
like you to write another post (again 200-300 words) about these ideas
as they are developed in the reading and portrayed visually in the digital
stories. For this post, you need to provide at least two detailed visual
examples from the digital stories on Alexandra’s website.
