If you are using sources aside from your text and lecture notes (or papers in class), please
cite. Make sure your sources are .gov or .edu if you go to the web. However, you should
not need to go to outside sources to answer any of these questions.
Answer 3 of the following 9 questions. Be quantitative if possible and try for specifics
rather than just general statements.
1. You are interested in a community garden for a group of 50 families. If you had to
design an integrated pest management plan for the garden (which is about 1 acre) what
would you do and why?
2. What are your thoughts regarding genetically modified crops (GMO) as a way to
enhance crop production? Consider transgenic vs. within species modifications. If GMOs
aren’t used, how might more food be grown as the population grows from 7 to 9.5 billion
people?
3. There are a few ways of valuing trees and forests. 1) Describe the kinds of things a
forester would be concerned with when evaluating a forest’s value (and how would they
measure such value). 2) As an environmentally conscious person, make an alternative
evaluation based on potential “public service functions” of the forest (and how would you
value those?)
4. The production of major cereal crops has hit a plateau as of 2005 and most available
grassland has been converted to cropland already. Two billion more people are on the
way. Explain some strategies the agriculture/food industry might use to deal with this
crisis. What are some drawbacks to the solutions?
5. What does the figure below describe? Why is this important in the context of forests
being able to sequester carbon? Is it better to hold carbon in mature trees or continuously
plant young trees with high growth rates?

6. A city park manager has run out of money to buy new plants. How can the parks
labor force alone be used to increase the diversity of (a) trees and (b) birds in the park?
7. Develop a plan to restore an abandoned field in your town to natural vegetation for use
as a park. The following materials are available: bales of hay; artificial fertilizer; and
seeds of annual flowers, grasses, shrubs, and trees.
8. More than 600 species of trees grow in Costa Rica, most of them in the tropical rain
forests. What might account for the coexistence of so many species with similar resource
needs? Discuss the ecological theory necessary to explain your answer.

9. Based on the figure below, discuss trends in global fisheries. How does diversity
effect the likelihood of a taxa collapsing (what is a collapsed taxa?).
