Part 1 – Human Impact
Activity 1 Narrowing choices
You have now chosen countries for locating your business. However, countries are large and
have great variation depending on the specific area chosen. As a team investigate 3 different
locations in each of the countries chosen and narrow down your focus area.
Then go back to your information on economic indicators and specifics of the location and add
this to your chart.
Activity 2 Labor Practices
With your team determine the International Labor Practices for the countries you have chosen
and whether they would have an impact on the success of your company functioning in the area.
Make a poster that graphically shows the issues of labor practices for the countries chosen. Use
color and graphics with few words but be sure it clearly shows the issues.
Gallery Walk – all students walk the room and view the posters. Using sticky notes, add
comments and questions to other team’s posters.
Teams review comments and questions on their poster and then hold a whole class discussion of
the answers.
Activity 3 Child Labor Case Study
Read through the case study on Child Labor. Identify the contributing factors and sequence of
events.
Then analyze the response to findings. Was the response effective? Were there unintentional
consequences? What is happening now?
Find other cases that are current. Are conditions better?
What could be done? How would you deal with these possible issues in relocating your
business?
Part – 2 Communicating with Strangers
Activity 1: Cultural Blunders
Investigate companies that have made major marketing blunders involving cultural issues. You
should be able to find many. Select at least 5 and make a graphic poster that shows the blunders.
Then discus your business and ow you will avoid similar issues.
Activity 2: Cultural Competency Case Study
Each team develops a case study involving cultural competency in a specific international
location. The case study should include details of the situation, what the breakdown or
misunderstanding is among individuals that is based on lack of understanding of cultural
differences, and problems that arise due to the lack of understanding. Be creative but build the
case on realistic expectations and possibilities for the culture.
Activity 3: Solve Cases
Exchange case studies with other teams and analyze the case. Determine what the issues are,
what effect the misunderstanding is, and what possible solutions can be posed.
