Misconceptions about Islam
In the understanding of the modern western world, Islam is associated with terrorism.
One of the motivating factors for it is the creation of the radical Islamic State based on the
terroristic organization ISIS. Nevertheless, in fact, the religion of Islam has nothing to do with
violence. Even, jihad, which is translated as war against non-Muslims, does not mean actual
military confrontation but the peaceful preservation of Islamic values. Due to it, the thesis for the
further research can formulated in such a way: Understanding of Islam as terroristic religion is
the result of pragmatic speculations with its commandments but not precise implementations of
the norms, stated in the Koran. The purpose of the paper is to identify the main ways, in which
terroristic organizations, misinterpret Islam to use it as the ideology for terrorism.
It is necessary to implement four steps to achieve this objective. The first one is the study
of the Koran, the main book of Muslims. The helpful source for it is the article Islam: A Religion
of Tolerance or Terrorism by Dr Farooq Hassan. He analyzes the Koran for the presence of such
notions as tasamuh (tolerance) and irhab (terrorism) (2012). Secondly, it is required to trace
the root of the notion irhab in Islam. The paper written by Caleb D McCarthy reveals the
secular origin of terrorism in Eastern culture (2015). Thirdly, the task is to present the common
myths about the connection between terrorism and Islam. The book Urban Terrorism: Myth and
Realities discusses the most common stereotypes about Islamic states (Asthana, & Nirmal,
2009). Finally, to debunk the misconceptions about Islam, it is necessary to show, on the
example of the concrete terroristic organizations, the possible ways of manipulations with
Islamic commandments. The book Is It About Islam discusses the vision of Islam by the global
terroristic organizations such as ISIS and Al Qaeda (Beck, 2015).
MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT ISLAM
To sum up, there are many misunderstandings dealing with Islam and its aggressive
nature. Therefore, it is a rather topical issue for researching to find whether Islamic terroristic
appeals have the spiritual roots or rather secular ones.
