Conceptual Understanding
5-6 points – Beginning (key concept mentioned, but no depth). One or more key concepts is mentioned and
the post uses some specific information from the text, but no concept is described in any depth or linked to any
example in a way that shows how the writer understands the concept. This could be a post that refers to facts
and mentions a key concept, or uses several terms in sentences without showing how they understand it.
EXAMPLES
?
I have experienced the benefits of secure parental attachments in regards to identity formation.
Without the connection I have with my mother I?m sure I wouldn?t have been able to better establish the
?confidence in the exploration of social relationships, ideologies, and settings? on my own and reach
identity achievement (p. 380). With these contributions, it?s obvious how a strong relationship with a
parent can incite curiosity in forming new relationships and the confidence that those will work out as
well. Secure attachment from infancy foster ?autonomy seeking behaviors? (p. 380) in adulthood.
In this post the author is using a lot terms and phrases that reflect key concepts, but they do not clearly
describe what these things mean or link them to clear examples to show how they understand them.
What do secure attachment, identity achievement, autonomy seeking behavior, etc. mean? What does
the text say about these ideas and what would be clear examples of them? Only using a term or phrase
from the text in a sentence doesn’t really show how you understand the key concept the phrase
represents. In this post the author has used a lot of terms but none of them are treated in any depth.
Focusing on less terms and going more in-depth is a much better approach.
?
The societal system (p. 8) can influence the psychological system (p. 7). I think conformity is a good
example to this topic because it is prevalent especially in today’s society where everyone is attached to
social media and public figures. Most people seek approval of what others consider good or acceptable
and don’t realize that they might also be losing their own sense of individuality.
The societal system, psychological system and how they interact is definitely a key concept. The start at
an example is potentially relevant. However, the post did not include any specific information about the
concepts here (e.g., What is the societal system? What is the psychological system) and it did not
specifically point out which part of what they were saying is related to which system. What part of this is
related to the societal system and why? Which part is related to the psychological system? How are they
interacting and how does this fit with what the text says about these key concepts? Without this level of
detail, I cannot see how you are thinking about this key concept, which is the point of chapter
discussions.
