1. Please give a description of the the lecture.
2. That is roughly what was covered overall from beginning to end. Try to give
some of the emotional tone and subjective spiritual meaning for the lecture.
Dr Dechant’s presentation consisted of three main topics:
1. The difference between how the world is now and how it was 10 years agoeconomically.
2. A brief outline of his book: the sacred Santa.
3. How Christmas is a sign of devotion for the religion of economy that has spread
severely throughout the United States.
To begin with, Dr. Dechant started off by pointing out the difference between
consumerism now and 10 years ago. As now consumerism is at an all-time high, as
70% to 80% of the US economy is based on consumerism. Moreover, he mentioned the
frightful five- Google, amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and apple- and how they mediate
the people’s experience of the world massively. For example, how they led people to
feel like they always need the newest products and how status and profile is
significantly related to what products a person uses! It even reached a point where
consumerism has led to several global issues like increased rate of extinction of wild
life, farmers, good soil, and indigenous people. He also added to his point by pointing
out how the president of the United States himself is denying all the problems that
consumerism has brought to the world only to maintain a strong economy.
In addition, as he was outlining his book, he mentioned how religion as we used to know
it has no effect on people, and how people’s religions are actually a lot different now. To
elaborate, he mentioned how Roy moir is a really bad person- condemned Islam,
attacked LGBTQ community, etc. – that represents himself as a “proud Christian”• and
ran for senate! Despite Christianity not approving to such manners! Also, he pointed out
how there are more Buddha statues sold than there are Buddhists in the US.
Last but not least, to elaborate on his third point, he mentioned that the ultimate power
that drives people in USA nowadays isn’t a monotheist god, it isn’t “nature”•, it is
economy.
 B. What was the main message?
The main message was that economy is the new religion of USA. He explained his
claim by showing how the myths and rituals of economy is consumption, how shamans
and priests are the salesmen, how the holy temples are the malls, how Santa is the
deity of this religion-as children go up to his ear and whisper all their desires to him-,
and how the myths and the rituals are the advertisements. He mentioned how this
lifestyle gave meaning and purpose to people’s lives, which made it legitimized.
Dr Dechant’s purpose was to raise awareness against this religion as it has huge
negative effects on our society like, dehumanization of others, destruction of nature,
addictive diseases related to consumption- like sex and drugs2. Name at least one revelation you took away from the lecture.
There is another way to solve issues related to global warming, and that is to approach
the problem from a religious perspective, rather than a scientific perspective. As it would
not only raise awareness, but it would affect people psychologically if we make them
feel how addicted they are the consumerism and the gods of economy!
3. According to Dechant, what are the various examples of “sacred”
consumption in America?
Valentine’s Day, Fourth of July, back to school, thanksgiving.
