The Oceans
Assignment – Ocean Topics Critical Thinking (2 parts)
Instructions:
? 1 pages minimum for each part, 2 pages maximum – single spaced
? Times New Roman 12 point font
? No bibliography needed,
Part I
The ocean provides us with an abundant amount of resources. However, when we use the
ocean, there are often trade offs associated with it. Some of these uses can be viewed by many
as controversial and often yield a right or wrong response. As a result, differing views are
developed by many and create a division of either for or against that particular ocean use. It is
important to understand both sides of an ocean use or issue, that way informed decision-making
can go into the management of the ocean and its resources.
This assignment is meant to test your critical thinking abilities. For this assignment, I want you to
choose from a list of the following ocean topics (see below) and write a brief summary based on
your personal feelings or beliefs on that certain topic. This means what you write is not
necessarily right or wrong, but it is to gauge and see what your current knowledge is on a
specific ocean topic and to see what original position (for or against) you are without any
additional knowledge – your own standpoint. (A brief look-up on the topic is permitted).
I want you to show the rationale behind your initial stance. I want you to write something
insightful or why you are convinced this is either right or wrong. I do not want a simple, ?this is
right, this is wrong? response. I want some thought put into your response. Base it on your
current knowledge of the topic, even though it may be very limited.
Part II (Due: Wednesday February 28th)
For the second part of this assignment, I want you to take the OPPOSITE approach. I want you
to write on the same ocean topic, but this time it will be from the other perspective. To help you
with this portion, you are able to access some information and conduct some brief research on
the topic to help, however, the goal is still intended for you to critically think.
For your conclusion, I want you to reflect on both approaches and tell me what you learned from
tackling both perspectives. This could mean you changed your original stance, it could simply
mean you are now aware of both sides of this ocean use or issue or you have a different
perspective overall. When you?re given access to additional information, it often allows you to
make an informed decision or stance. This is the goal of this assignment.
