Introduction
Sports in colleges in the United States are a tradition that has grown over the years.
Young people with skills and an interest in playing sports while keeping up with their studies
have the opportunity to do so even in college. These college kids are however not paid for all the
profits they enable their universities to gain. Their long hour’s training, playing, winning
championships and juggling between schoolwork are rewarded by payment of their tuition and
boarding fees which is inadequate for covering all the school fees. The most significant
beneficiaries of the student’s hard work are the confederations and the universities they attend.
Due to the energy and time are given by these young athletes, it is not only critical but also
necessary to pay them for their play. On the other hand, the implications concerning paying of
college athletes are met by mixed reactions. Various claims, assumptions, and arguments are
given for why they should not receive payment. However, college athletes should be paid since
they dedicate a lot of time, energy and sacrifice various aspects of their life such as social life to
be better at their sport while maintaining good grades.
History of the Issue and Current status
College sports have improved over time with more student getting opportunities to streamline
their skills and some joining national teams. A sense of pride is derived by both the student and
their college when they make it that far in sports. In fact, colleges have become more serious
about the idea of student-athletes seeing that they assist the universities in enjoying large
amounts of profits and a good reputation. Moreover, agencies and organizations regarding the
college athletes were created, and a system developed. Some of the organizations include

National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics (NAIA) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The system in
college athletics for organizations is tiered such that the elite sportsmen are handled by the
NCAA and the junior athletes managed by the NJCAA. Unfortunately, these organizations are
only recognized for benefiting from the student’s hard work and giving a luxurious stay in school
rather than real appreciation/ compensation. The issue of payment of college athletes has been
debated over the past recent years. Efforts to get these organization to pay athletes have been
dismissed and been futile. Some of the reason is due to argument and problem that will be
discussed.
Payment of sports being feared to led to poor performance in class
Critics to the idea of paying college athletes believe that college students who play sports
may shift their focus from schoolwork and end up getting poor grades. Age is cited as one of the
obstacles of going forward with paying college athletes. While it is true that young people may
fail in school seeing that they are already earning a living, it is important to note that even
without the pay there are those who still fail. Payment is not the problem; the school system is
the problem when it comes to college athletes. The school system should balance out their
extracurricular activities with the students’ classes to allow individual achieve a balance. Since
there are students who are already failing in school, we cannot cite payment as the reason behind
their poor performance because they do not get paid (Fletcher, Benshoff, & Richburg, 2003).
School can put in place a system that prohibits missing of classes, tests and other related matters
and still require them to practice their interests such as sports. Payment will not produce bad
grades a poor college system will lead to poor performance in college athletes. In a journal
article authored by Ted Sherman, it was revealed that some schools commit academic fraud to

allow their students to pay without limitations. Such issues have to be addressed minus the issue
concerning payment of college athletes.
Participation in sports for pay be an alternative profession
Another issue that is brought up is the fact that encouraging sports and professional
playing may drive college students to abandon alternative career choices and join sports instead.
This thinking is flawed since according to statistics provided by the NCAA less than half of the
college athletes pursue sports beyond college. There are reasons for this low numbers with a
common one being injuries. Conversely, the other half complete college and pursues other
interest and they join various sectors and industries. Sports may be an alternative profession, but
paying of college athletes does not motivate them to abandon other interests. It encourages them
to be better at their skills while also performing well in school an even evaluating the careers
they would be interested in beyond sports (Purdy, Eitzen, & Hufnagel, 2002). A smaller issue
attached to this problem is that many view athletics to be a better paying profession as compared
to other career options. This too is not a problem per se since in the end, the individual has to
make a choice and that choice is not affected by their payment as a college athlete.
Payment in sports support growth and development of talents
College students use their period in college for growth as individual and growth in their interest,
talents, and skills. While some prefer to join different clubs, a portion of the population joins
sports which fortunately are highly encouraged. College sports have been known to open up
opportunities for students to do more sports or even get exposure and recognition and thus get
career options related to sports (Jung, 2015). While this happens without the students receiving
payment, the idea can be bettered by payment of athletes. Payment acts as an appreciation for the

efforts of the students in perfecting their skills and more so as a motivation to continue striving
to be the best. While this is not precisely the problem, the problem is that not paying athlete may
demotivate them during hard times.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the idea of paying athletes in college has been met with a lot of opposition
with various groups believing all manner problems that arise from the idea. However, some of
the problems brought forth can be solved, and the solution lies in finding ways to mitigate them.
For instance, investigation of the problem of poor performance as a result of engaging in sorts by
students can be solved by the creation of a system that creates a balance between school
activities.

Introduction
In the United States of America, college sports are very popular and the sports
tradition in colleges has been there over the years with approximately 400,000 students both
male and female participating in sanctioned athletics annually. Students get an opportunity to
sharpen their skills in sports while still carrying on with studies. On the other hand, colleges
benefit from the athletes in that they gain publicity from their success in sports which result
in donations to the college from alumni and increased interest from potential students.
Colleges also gain considerable revenue from athletic programs. Despite the huge revenues
the colleges get from athletic programs, the athletes are not paid (Willborn, 2014). The
reward an athlete gets for their hard work in juggling between books and sports, long hours of
training and winning champions is a scholarship, maybe the best dorm rooms, free books and
classes on campus. There has been a debate on whether student-athletes should be paid
whereby some people suggest that they should be paid while others say the athletes have
already been paid through scholarships (Sanderson & Siegfried, 2015). Not all the
scholarships are full scholarships and some students cannot afford some educational
expenses, entertainment or even dining. Unlike the other students who are allowed to work
outside summertime, student-athletes do not get time to work for they have to balance
between class work and training. Therefore the student-athletes should be paid since they
commit themselves a lot to sports, dedicating their time and energy and sacrificing their
social lives to better their skills despite the hardships of balancing between class work and
sports and it will benefit both the students and the institutions.

History of the Issue and the Current Status
In 1843, Yale University formed the first sports club and after that college sports have
grown in popularity over the years giving students an opportunity to sharpen their skills while
schooling to a level of some even joining national teams. With the understanding of the
impact of athletics on colleges, many colleges have taken the matter seriously and are
encouraging the student to engage in sports. Sport governing bodies have been created to
sanction sports in colleges. Some of these bodies that are major include the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Junior College Athletic Association
(NJCAA) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). NCAA is an
organization that handles elite sportsmen while NJCAA deals with junior athletes. These
organizations generate substantial revenue in advertising, television and licensing (Warren,
2017). For instance, in 2014, NCAA earned revenue of around $753.5 million. The income
the colleges have been getting in the 21st century has been increasing resulting to some
people complaining that a share of the income should be given to athletes. The efforts have
borne no fruits with some of the arguments against paying athletes been;
1. Payment of student-athletes may lead to poor performance in class
Those against college athletes being paid argue that the performance of the athletes in
class may be affected if they start being paid (Tucker et al., 2016). Age has been used as one
of the reasons why the student-athletes should not be paid, it has been argued that paying
these young athletes may lead to them shifting their focus from academics to sports hence
poor performance in school. It might make them think that they already have an earning
hence no need to put efforts in school work. However, this is not true because it is upon the
school system to balance between class work and extracurricular activities. Even now when

students are not been paid, failure of students is witnessed in colleges and therefore payment
cannot be included in the list of reasons why students are failing in colleges. It is upon the
college system to ensure that student-athletes balance between class work and sports, for
example by coming up with strict rules to ensure that they do not miss classes and a way to
follow up their performance in class. Some schools do not put limitations on their students
and which leads to poor performance in class and this cannot be blamed on the students but
the system. Therefore payment of college athletes will not contribute to poor performance in
class but it is the school’s system that will contribute.
2. Students may take participating in sports as an alternative profession
It has been argued that paying college students may lead to the students taking sports
as a profession and not considering other career options (Tucker et al., 2016). Paying college
athletes will only motivate them better their skills while still schooling. At the end of the
day, one will be able to table their interests, evaluate them and make decisions concerning
careers. Statistics from a survey carried by NCAA show that less than a half of college
athletics take sports as a profession. Majority join other sectors and industries after school.
Even though athletics might be an alternative profession, it depends on one’s interests and
one been paid as a college athlete cannot change their interests. The only issue that may arise
in this context is that athletics might be a better paying profession compared to other
professions. However, the choice that a student will make cannot be influenced by the
payment they got as a college athlete. Therefore, there is no connection between payment of
college athletes and their career choices.
The college has been a place to develop one’s talent, skills and interests, motivating
the students is important since unlike other practices in college to develop one’s skills,
sporting is not easy. It’s time-consuming and entails sacrificing a lot. College sports give

students an opportunity to improve their skills and discover their talents. The students also
gain exposure from sports activities and get to know sports-related career opportunities. The
college athletes, therefore, need to be motivated and appreciated for the extra miles they go.
One of the ways of doing this is by paying them.
Solution
The solution to this debate which has been there for quite some time is to pay college
athletes for it will encourage more students to engage in sports. It will act as a motivation to
students. As a result, both students and the colleges will benefit from athletics programs
(Jung, 2015). The more the students engage in sports the more the probability of getting the
best skills and talents. As a result, there will be stronger teams to compete for championships
hence increased revenue. As we have seen above, the reasons cited as to why college athletes
should not be paid are unrealistic and the problems associated with the payment are solvable.
Athletes, therefore, should not be denied what they deserve on basis of reasons which are not
even practical. They generate a lot of revenue to the governing organizations as well as the
colleges they represent in athletics but they do not receive what is due. Therefore, it would
only be fair if these athletes were given what they deserve (Groves, 2015).
Advantages of Paying College Athletes
If the NCAA chose to pay college athletes as a way of motivating and appreciating
them for their efforts and the revenue they generate, some of the advantages would be;
1. It would provide financial support to the athletes
Despite the athletes been given scholarships, they are not enough for the athletes’
survival in school considering that some come from financially unstable families. If the
athletes were been paid, they would be able to afford decent meals, educational expenses and
even support their families back at home. Some of the athletes come from poor families and

they undergo really difficult financial struggles to remain in school. Some borrow loans to
enable them to continue with education. If they were been paid for participating in sports, the
pay would help them get through school without having to borrow large amounts of money
(Willborn, 2014). Unlike regular students who are allowed to have part-time jobs to cater for
their expenses in school, athletes cannot get that time because of their busy schedules trying
to balance between class, practice, and championships.
Some face the pressure to be the providers to their siblings and parents back at home
despite their young age. Some are even forced to leave school to go to look for a job in order
to support their families. A recent research carried by NCAA on graduation rates show that
86% of student-athletes graduated in 2016. If athletes were been paid, it would probably
increase this percentage of graduation rates and players would possibly stay longer which
would be the pleasure of fans seen their favorite players grow (Sanderson & Siegfried, 2015).
2. It will give the students motivation.
Paying college athletes will motivate students to be physically fit in order to
participate in the sports. It will also motivate the students to sacrifice more of their time to
sharpen their skills. As a result, students’ skills will be developed and a stronger team will be
created, more tournaments won, more prestige gained and hence increase in revenue
generated (Groves, 2015). On the other hand, it will motivate the students to work hard in
their studies since athletes are expected to perform well academically too.
Since money will attract people at any time, more students will be attracted to
participate in different sports and new talents will be unveiled. Due to the recommended diet
and vigorous training involved in sports, more students will be fit and healthy.
3. There will be balance in profit.

College athletes generate a lot of revenue to their schools through donations,
advertisements, and endorsement. All that revenue comes as a result of students’ hard work.
An article in last month’s Business Insider stated that an average player of University of
Louisville in Division I is worth $ 170,098 per year with basketball programs alone getting an
average revenue of more than 4.5 million per annum. However, the only benefit the studentathletes get from this revenue is scholarships. The students never get what is due and they
deserve to be compensated for their labor (Willborn, 2014). It would only be fair if the profits
were shared between the athletes and the school (Jung, 2015). That way there would be
balance in profit and would ensure that not only the universities enjoy the profits.
Conclusion
Paying college athletes will not only improve their performance in class and in sports,
it will also benefit the institutions involved by getting more revenue from athletics programs.
It is upon the NCAA committee to draw a conclusion on this matter and start paying the
athletes. They risk their lives when engaging in these sports and many give up after injuries
occur which occur frequently and it is that time when they realize they are not gaining
anything worth their lives from the college sports. Statistics by NCAA show that annually,
the average overall estimate of sports injuries is 210,674 for both males and females. Some
even find it hard to balance between the pressure to perform well in class and in sports and
they end up giving up on sports. Generally, it is not easy to juggle between school work and
athletics and therefore these students need to be motivated. It is time these organizations and
schools start paying the athletes before more talents go to waste. It will be of benefit to the
students, the governing organizations and the institutions (Warren, 2017).
