Chess is a board game that symbolizes two medieval armies in a battle. The game is
played by two players on a checkered board and the objective is to Check and Checkmate the
opponent. Chess has been cited to have many benefits for enhancing the brain’s mental and
logical processing capacity.
Setting up the Chess Board
The first step in knowing how to play the game is learning to properly set up the pieces
on the board. The chess board has 64 squares in an eight-by-eight grid with alternating light and
dark squares. Each army is made up of a King, a Queen, two Bishops, two Knights, two Rooks
or Castles and eight Pawns with each of the pieces having specific movement capabilities. When
positioned correctly, each player should have a dark square in the left corner of their side. The
two armies have different colors and are set up opposing each other across the board. The
smallest pieces are the pawns and are set up manning the front or second rank row in each army.
The larger pieces are set up on the first row with the royal couple at the center of the army and
flanked by the bishops, knights and rooks on each side in that order. The Rooks would therefore
be positioned at the corners of the board for each player.
Learning the Rules
After setting up the chess board, one would have to learn how to play the game. The
player with the white pieces always makes the first move. The ultimate goal in the game is to
trap the king of the opponent’s army, which is referred to as a checkmate, to have won the battle.
Each player takes turns to move one piece at a time in a bid to strengthen one’s position and
weaken the opponents. When a player lands on a square that is occupied by one of the
opponent’s piece, the piece is “captured” and removed from the board.
Pieces can never move onto a square on which one of the same-army pieces if currently
occupying. Apart from some few exceptions such as the King and Knight, pieces usually can
never move through pieces of the same side. This means that pieces of the same shade cannot
displace each other on a particular square. Pieces can move onto a square on which an opposing
army’s piece is currently occupying, upon which the later piece is captured.
The idea is to use one’s pieces to arrive at a situation where it is impossible for the
opponent’s king to make one more move without avoiding capture, upon which the attacking
player must call “Check”. The player that is attacked must move the King out of Check if
possible. If not, the game is a Checkmate and the attacking player wins.
Movement Capabilities for Each Piece
The King is perhaps the weakest piece in the game yet the most significant since the
game would end when it is captured. The King can only move one square in any direction onto a
square that is not occupied by pieces in its army. The King can capture one of the opponent’s
pieces that are located in the next one square.
The King however has the allowance of a special move called Castling that is allowed
only once in a game. The move involves exchanging the positions of the King and Rook. The
move can be used as part of a larger offensive advance and attack but cannot be used to protect
the King under attack. The two pieces have to be on their initial squares. The Castling move is
executed by moving the King only two squares towards the Rook and carrying the Rook to the
Kings original position, which would move over the King in its new position. The move cannot
be used to remove the King faced with an attack in the next move.
The queen is considered the most powerful piece and can move back and forth any
number of squares along the vertical, horizontal or diagonal directions. The queen can capture
any of the opponent’s piece that is located in its path.
The Bishop can move diagonally any number of squares. It cannot move straight forward
or backward and horizontally, and can only capture the opponent’s pieces that are located on its
diagonal path.
The Knight can only move two spaces horizontally or vertically in any direction and then
moving one square on any side to complete an L-shaped move covering three squares. To
execute the move, the knight is the only piece that can jump over other pieces to land on the
target square. The Knight can capture any of the opponent’s pieces that would be located in the
target square.
The Rook can move across the board any number of squares along its current row or
column. It can capture any of the opponent’s pieces located in its vertical or horizontal path.
Pawns can only move one square forward or two squares when making their first move in
the game. Pawns can only attack any of the opponent’s pieces that would be located one square
on the forward right or left diagonal. Pawns cannot capture moving straight forward and can only
move straight forward into an empty square.
Basic Strategies for Playing
Knowing the rules of the game is however not enough. One has to know some basic
strategies beyond the elementary level of the game. The simplest checkmate pattern in chess uses
only two moves to win the game. This can happen only when the two pawns in front of the
Queen on each side have been moved forward and the King is exposed to attack by the
opponent’s Queen from one diagonal direction. Other simple patterns for checkmate would use a
larger number of moves and would require the absence of some of the other pieces after they
have been captured. These simple strategies to capture the King include using the Queen and
Rook, using two Rooks and using the Queen alone.
