Part 1
The US military has an important role to play in both national as well as international
security. The military continually makes use of the economic, diplomatic and political might of
the US to leverage American influence in international issues.
Part 2
In 2015, the American military deployed soldiers in Cameroon to help neutralize the
Boko Haram insurgency in the West African region. After the approval of the
Cameroonian government, it deployed 300 troops of soldiers to help provide intelligence
reports to locals as well as conduct resonance flights. It oversaw a program to transfer
American military vehicles to the Cameroonian army.
In 2015, the US deployed the navy to the Strait of Harmuz to shield vessels after the
Iranians seized commercial vessels (Hook & Spanier, 2015). The US navy therefore
deployed warships to protect the American commercial vessels passing through the Strait
of Hormuz from the Iranian interference. Furthermore, there were worries concerning the
fact that US container ship was being trailed by Iranian gunships.
During the late 1800s, the US superpower was born as the US managed to experience
economic prosperity and growth. It became a colonial power with colonies overseas and
the development of a new foreign policy marked a change in the US nation as it was able
to establish itself. The US was able to adapt to the world political changes and it took as
strategic position of power.
Another important factor that led to the development of the US as a superpower was the
circumstances surrounding the cold war (Reveron,2016). The US experienced a
renaissance during the presidency of Eisenhower and the nation was able to contend with
the USSR on economic, politically as well as military issues.
Another major issue leading to the occurrence of the US as a superpower was the
collapse of the USSR as a world superpower. The USSR had been a world superpower
for a considerable time and it had a major influence on international relations. However,
with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the US was establishing itself as world
One major intervention occurred when the CIA organized a coup in Guatemala to remove
the progressive government of Jacobo Arbenx who had a rule marred by death squads as
well as mass executions, torture and cruelty. The US feared that the Guatemalan system
of rule would spread to other nations in the area.
The US also engaged in efforts to remove the leader Prince Sihanouk from rule in
Cambodia President Nixon took charge of the events and Washington was able to assist
in the dislodgement of the Prince from rule. The secret carpet bombings that had occurred
from 1969-1970 had a major role to play.
The US also intervened in El Salvador’s situation as civilian dissidents tried to overturn
the system (Chomskey, 2015). The US was able to support the government’s attempts to
push away these dissidents through the use of electoral fraud as well as controlling
protesters through the use of brutal methods. Even after the initiation of a civil war, the
US decided to support the government through offering advisory support as well as
material support through issuing weapons.
The driving force in the US influence in this particular circumstance was the fear of
Guatemala’s social democracy movement growing to other nations (Mead,2013). The
USA feared the implications of a growing Guatemalan influence in the region and they
had anticipated the implications of this movement on the stability of the region.
The reason for the US interference in Cambodia was the fear that the nation continued to
implement communist policies. The nation had clear communist ideologies and therefore
the United States found it necessary to intervene before the nation could establish its
influence in the area.
The US decided to intervene in the situation in El Salvador because it believed that the
growing social movement in the region was not one that was in good interests. The US
believed that the movement would deteriorate the state of the nation and therefore
decided to work towards improving the situation.
