The United States has had an extensive history regarding its health care system
throughout its history. The American people have not been able to agree on a system that works
for its people. The problem with health care in America is that it isn?t affordable to the masses
and it is literally a multibillion dollar private industry. The current healthcare industry would like
to keep it the way that it is so they can keep the prices high without having the government
intervene in the process. However, under the Affordable Healthcare Reform Act the government
came in and made health care mandates. This act is going to give millions of American?s the
access to healthcare by 2023. In theory, this sounds good and it appears that the masses would be
receptive to this Act. Contrarily, it has been met with a degree of resistance.
Affordable Care Act
The purpose of the Affordable Care Act, or ACA, is to make health insurance more
affordable for those with little or no coverage (“Understanding the Affordable Care Act”,
2017). Nearly 15% of the American population, an estimated 46 million in 2012, had
no health insurance during most of the calendar year (“Understanding the
Affordable Care Act”, 2017). The ACA mandates that the population become in
compliance with the new act; however the penalty for not being in compliance is
not that severe and actually cost less than paying the premium for insurance (“5
controversies surrounding the Affordable Care Act”, 2017). An alternative to ACA
would have been to expand and improve Medicare for All Act, HR 676, in congress,

would eliminate the insurance industry and create a lifelong comprehensive
coverage for everyone (Flowers, 2017).
Responsibilities of Government
The main function of the U.S. federal government is creating and enforcing
laws to ensure or and stability to society. Additionally, the constitution outlines the
nation?s law making process and establishes institutions to carry out this function.
In order to avoid the concentration of power to a single individual or branch of
government the founding fathers separated law making powers into three
branches: legislative, executive and judicial. The legislative composed of the House
of Representatives and the Senate, create laws.
In Summary
The ACA was passed in order to deal with the nation?s issue of having 15% of
its population that were not covered by insurance. The ACA was met with an
opposing view of expanding the Medicare for All Act that would have eliminated the
insurance industry and provided coverage for all. The U.S. government
responsibility is to ensure that the legislative, composed of the House of
Representatives and the Senate, create laws.
