Abstract
The role the internet plays is vital in the lives of students and teenagers. The research
aimed to find out that indeed the internet is one of the biggest threats to education. The study
included a face-to-face interview of secondary teachers and lecturers in universities and colleges.
Five themes were identified in the research: effects of the use of the internet by students and
teachers, opinions on the use of the internet as a research tool by students, drawback on the use
of internet in schools, the academic performance of students due to internet use. It was found out
that although the internet has benefits such as being a valuable source of information and a
teaching aid by motivating and making teaching more fun, it has negatively affected students
leading to cheating in exams, insomnia, poor grades, and the overall conduct of students was not
good.

Students are the most common users of the internet. And from many scientific types of
research, the internet influences them more negatively than positively. Not a single student will
agree with these findings leading to the question, though the internet offers little advantages, they
are not as important as the threat the internet poses to education.
Whenever youngsters and understudies spend most of their time and abstain the face-toface interactions, their associations with loved ones will be affected. According to the
Washington Post review and its findings, around 6% of members said that their connections were
affected as a result of internet usage. It is trusted that a few people who incline toward internet
talking since it some way or another isolates them from this present reality.
The lack of creativity in young individuals and understudies is another negative impact of
the internet. A crucial component of the internet is the easy access to information and data. This
component is beneficial to individuals since they gain access to required data. (Özcan & Buzlu,
S.2007) When everything is accessible, there is no requirement for imagination. Understudies no
longer need to focus on their studies now since they just need a couple of minutes to access the
internet and get all the information they need and copy paste into their work. This issue leads to

considered as one of the evilest harmful effects of the internet. Cyber-crime is more secure and
more straightforward than physical harassment because no legal requirements are controlling it.
Victims of cyber-crime may feel offended or humiliated because of the evil remarks or

will be more regrettable on adolescents, particularly on the individuals who are in pubescence
with all the weakness and affectability. There is a definite relationship demonstrated between
digital harassing and self-destructive endeavors by casualties. Understudies are thought to be
most harassed on the Internet. Cyber-crime can make an individual commit suicide.
Internet usage leads to time wasting. When too much time is spent on the internet
students, lack time for other activities. Many understudies and young people invest the more
significant part of their time watching films, surfing Facebook and playing online video games
contrary to learning or doing other meaningful exercises. The primary reason for the internet was
to enable understudies and adolescents to be more productive, and it now influences them to do

There is an exchange of knowledge between students in universities with organizations
and corporate clusters that are related to various disciplines. These interactions are beneficial to
students because they gain exposure which will be important in their lives and the companies in
which they may work. (Blais, Craig, Pepler, & Connolly 2008).
The internet has made teachers more advanced. Students receive their assignments on
their emails and online portals. Furthermore, the creation of online libraries and portals by
schools have been beneficial since students can access the scanned copies of books and notes
prepared by their teachers. Students are also able to access the latest news and information on the
organizations and corporates which is beneficial in answering interview questions. (Stošic, L.
2015).
Despite the fact that internet is beneficial to students the adverse effects of the internet
outweigh the positive impact. The reason students go to school is to better their future lives by
acquiring knowledge that is helpful in their careers. Access to the internet has resulted in
students` scoring low grades. This is a clear indication that the internet is doing more harm than
good. Students also use the internet to cheat, and their creativity level has also been affected.
Conclusively, the increased adverse effects of the internet raise serious questions about
the daily use of the internet. Most of the adverse effects are related to the benefits. There is,
therefore, the need of limiting internet use to students to improve their lives. Students should not
be allowed to be dependent on the internet, but instead, they should develop some interesting
real-life habits like reading books and other activities that will improve their lives.
