Process Analysis Prompt
The purpose of writing a process analysis is to tell OR share with others how
something is done, how something is made or how something works. Keeping this in
mind, write a process analysis on a topic you know very well about and is
manageable. Do not select a subject that is too big to handle. For example, you may
want to write about how to assemble Boeing 747, but it won?t be manageable because
there is too much information to include.
Your process analysis MUST contain the following elements:
Introductory Paragraph
Your introductory paragraph should introduce the topic to your readers such as by
telling them where and when did you learn about the procedure. To seize your readers’
attention, explain why the process you are going to describe matters to you and why
your readers should be interested in knowing it. After reading your introductory
paragraph, your readers should have
i)
a good idea of the procedure you are going to describe
ii)
understand why you wanted to share it with them
iii) what they are going to learn from reading your essay.
Body Paragraph(s)
Your body paragraphs should explain each step in detail using descriptive words and
vivid language. All the steps involving the procedure should be woven together into
an essayic format using transitional words and/or connectives such as ?here,? ?now,?
?next,? ?then,? ?before that,? ?afterward,? ?while,? ?equally important,? ?finally,? etc.
You may recall that there are two types of process analysis: i) directive and
ii) explanatory. In a directive process analysis, you list all the steps involved in
making, doing, or performing something, whereas in an explanatory process analysis
you provide a detailed description of how something is made, done or performed.
Your process analysis should be written in an explanatory format. If you structure it in
a directive format (as shown below), you will receive zero points for the assignment.
Step I: Bring a piece of lumber from the barn.
Step II: Soak it in gasoline, etc.
Conclusion
The conclusion of your process analysis should give a sense of closure. It should also
leave your readers with a feeling that the time they spent on reading your essay was
worth it.
Length: 2-3 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman (font)
Note: Please, do not use a lot of fancy words in this essay. Try to keep it simple and
good.
