English 236: Introduction to the Short Story
Paper 2: Literary Analysis
The first essay we wrote gave you an opportunity to explore a short story by answering a
prompt. Now, you should dig deeper to reveal an interesting or insightful observation about
at least one of the short stories we’ve read so far.
You will write a literary analysis. This is a thesis-driven question that make an argument
about the story you’ve chosen. You may fulfill this requirements in many ways; here are
some suggestions:
?
?
?
?
Use a literary criticism (a “lens”) to analyze a story.
Look closely at symbols, motifs, or other literary devices to determine their
overarching significance.
Focus on characterization (direct and/or indirect) to dig deeper into a character.
Compare and contrast two or more stories to reveal a pattern, to analyze a
particular writer’s style, or to make connections that would otherwise be overlooked.
Your thesis statement, which is the purpose of your essay, should go beyond the obvious.
You must also answer the “so what?” question. Why do your observations matter?
This essay must go further than essay #1. You should be demonstrating an increased ability
for critical thinking. This essay must be at least 750 words, but not longer than 1200 words.
Sample essays
We already read a sample essay about “The Yellow Wallpaper.” Here are other sample
essays:
? Paper about The Old Man and the Sea.
? Paper about The Odyssey.
? Paper about a sonnet (the sonnet is included)
Warning: I strongly suggest that you don’t choose “The Yellow Wallpaper” for this assignment. We have
discussed this story and analyzed a sample essay extensively, so it will be difficult to come up with an idea that
doesn’t copy what has been already said about this particular story. If your essay merely repeats what the
sample essay says, you won’t earn a good grade on this assignment (and you might have to face plagiarism
charges).
Grading Rubric
When I grade your essay, I will look for the following requirements
Requirements
Possible
Points
Points
The essay presents a strong thesis statement in the introduction of
the essay. This is an arguable and not-obvious/factual statement.
10
The introduction is well-developed and focused. The full name of
the short story and its author are mentioned at least once.
The conclusion is well-developed and provides a sense of closure.
The thesis statement is restated (but not copied word for word).
10
The body of the essay is well organized. The paragraphs are
cohesive and there are strong transitions. Topic sentences help the
reader navigate the essay.
30
The essay provides a focused and insightful explanation that
supports the thesis statement. The ideas presented go beyond the
obvious and demonstrate the student’s critical thinking skills
(beyond what was demonstrated in essay #1). The essay goes
beyond what was said in class. These selections are well explained
and cited correctly.
50
The ideas presented are well-supported with evidence from the
text. Though scenes and portions of the short story are either
copied or paraphrased, the essay is not merely (or mostly) a
summary of the story.
50
MLA style is correctly applied to the essay, the quotations, the
paraphrases, and the works cited page.
20
The essay is well-written. Overall, the essay is readable and exhibits 20
good grammar. Sentences are well written and spelling is correct.
The essay presents references and correct use of literary terms as
they relate to the short story.
