IMPACTS OF ALCOHOL ABUSE
2
Mr. Potts alcohol related medical condition has significantly affected his wife and
children. Both his wife and children have spent long hours at the hospitals when Mr. Potts
recovered from his heart attacks as well as surgery. Mr. Potts medical condition is related to his
excessive consumption of alcohol. However, regardless the explicit advice from the doctors to
quit drinking, Mr. Potts continues to take in large amounts of alcohol that endanger his health
further. These habits have negatively affected his children more so Cindy who has developed
behavioral problems due to her fathers behaviors. Mr. Potts lacks any relationship with his wife
and children and shows little concern for their wellbeing. He leaves his wife to do all the packing
and organizing during their yearly trips. He also puts his wife through humiliating situations
when he misbehaves in these situations.
Mr. Potts condition has caused a lot of stress to both his wife and children who reveal
this in different ways. Mr. Potts doesnt have a sound relationship with his daughters who react
differently to this lack of connection with their father. Cindy has turned into an angry child
whereas Sarah sympathizes with her father for his condition and behavior. Cindy is emotionally
disturbed and doesnt know how to express these suppressed emotions rather than mutilating
herself. His wife is also emotionally disturbed although she attempts to respond to the questions
carefully to avoid saying inappropriate things that can result in constraints with angry husbands.
Mrs. Potts seems to have been negatively affected by Mr. Potts alcohol abuse. Mr. Potts
doesnt help her with anything in their lives including packing or organizing for the two annual
trips. Mr. Potts also put his wife through humiliating experiences due to his misconduct when
drunk. Although Mrs. Potts acts in a guided manner during our interaction as the parole officer,
she is emotionally disturbed and undergoing a lot of stress. She is also afraid of revealing a lot of

personal information about her husband that can result to emotional difficulties between them.
The threat of domestic violence has not been ruled out hence Mrs. Potts fear of expressing inner
details and information about her husband.
On the other hand, Sarah seems to be managing her life pretty well. She feels sorry for
her father and sympathizes with him on many occasions. She also tries to put the family together
and eliminate the problems caused by Mr. Potts drinking problem. Although she acts to be okay,
seeing her father health deteriorate due to something preventable negatively affects her. Mr.
Potts has been admitted in the hospital on numerous occasions before his surgery and heart
attacks. These health challenges and the lack of emotional connection and the unavailability to
Mr. Potts affect her emotional development although she hides away her suffering and stands up
to be there for everyone else while she is suffering on the inside. She cares for her father a lot
hence she is going through a very tough time and the worst case is that she camouflages and
hides her suffering to appear okay to everyone else.
Cindy is a very angry child. She not only suffers due to her fathers alcohol abuse but his
heart condition as well. She feels the increased need to reach out and talk to someone who will
hear her out and help her. However, none of her parents seems to be hearing her cries that have
resulted to her self-mutilating behaviors as a cry for help as well as attention. She wants the
attention of someone who will listen and step up to her assistance. Mr. Potts alcohol abuse has
resulted in lack of emotional and functional relationship with his daughter he doesnt involve
himself with her life that hurts her feelings and has affected her mental development. Cindy
behavior problems can be attributed to the stressful experiences with her fathers emotional
detachment and his increased drinking and frightening nature. Cindy is stressed or worse
depressed to the unfavorable conditions experienced during her childhood.
