English 101:
Essay 4: Research/Argumentative Paper
Final Draft and Process Folder Due: December 13
Prompt
For your final paper, I want you to once again join (and add to) a conversation, just like you did
with Essay 3. In Essay 3, you responded to the “They Say” of one writer, and the conversation
was happening in the overlapping contexts of journalism and politics. Now, in Essay 4, you will
be responding to and synthesizing the views of multiple writers, and you will be joining a
conversation in the world of education.
To begin, think of a research question about an issue in education, especially college education.
The question should be important to you and will require reading academic sources for you to
reach a conclusion. Using the research question as a guide, do library research (including
online) to find 4 to 5 academic, relevant, and credible sources, and create an annotated
bibliography of your sources. Next, write an argumentative thesis statement that answers your
research question based on the sources you found, and a paper outline. Finally, write the paper.
Requirements
Essay 4 should:
• Be at least 4 full pages long, double-spaced.
• Include properly-formatted MLA in-text citations and a Works Cited page.
• Use 4 to 5 academic, relevant, and credible sources.
• Have a clear, argumentative thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph.
• Have a lead that establishes the context and relevance of the essay and its argument.
• Have topic sentences at the beginning of each body paragraph.
• Have body paragraphs that prove the thesis statement using evidence from the sources.
• Have an ending that not only recapitulates the argument of the paper but also has a
satisfying closer.
• Be modeled on the academic “moves” described in They Say / I Say.
• Apply the principles of simplicity and humanity taught by On Writing Well.
Note on Library Resources: You are not required to visit the Writing Center for this paper, but
you are highly encouraged to consult with the tutors there. You are also highly encouraged to
seek the assistance of our librarians in your search for relevant and credible sources.
