The author of the article “Pretty Much Fear!!? Rationalizing Teacher
(Dis)Engagement in Social Justice Education.”, assesses the state of US
teachers.Teachers sometimes find it hard to address issues of social justice
in classrooms. This can be articulated to the idea that most of them are less
informed on how to handle such cases. In the US, this has been a big
challenge to both educators and teachers. For example, the author analyses
how teachers navigate, absorb and talk about the many forms of social
injustices. Teacher education programs are integral when it comes to
teachers understanding the diversity that is there in the US classrooms.

Proposal for Research
For most people, marriage is a bond between a man and a woman, a promise to support
and love each other until they die. In some developing countries, however, it is common
for young girls to marry before they are eighteen years old. Child marriage not only
deprives a young girl of her right to health and security, but also education. My research
question for this paper is, ?What is the association between child marriage and school
dropout rates in developing countries?? I will be answering this questions with my
thesis, which states that, although it is argued that there is not a direct relation between
school drop-out rates and child marriage in developing countries, marrying at a young
age can negatively affect a young girl?s aspiration to become a future professional. I
believe that this is an important topic to explore because education is a fundamental
right every person is entitled to. Although there may be instances when families feel
pressured to succumb to child marriage, there is nothing more important that a child?s
Review of Relevant Research
Child marriage is a formal marriage, or informal union, that occurs before the age of
eighteen. For years, it has been seen as a solution for insecurity, poverty and political
or financial power. Although most countries have moved away from this trend, some
developing countries continue to practice it. While researching this topic, most articles
written by humanitarian organizations focused on defining child marriage and
explaining how to prevent it. Although both previous topics are important, the impact
on education is just as significant, since girls are restricted of their human right to
receive one. While various writers agree that it is not clear that child marriage directly
causes school dropouts, they also agree that it is a factor that puts an end to girls?
education. It is important to understand how child marriage and school dropouts relate
so that there can be a further incentive to prevent child marriage.
To answer the question motivating this study, I will be using the Library to research
articles regarding the relationship between child marriage and school dropouts within
the last century. I hope to find evidence that child marriage and dropout rates do have
an effect on each other so that it can strengthen my argument that child marriage forces
a young girl to give up her dreams of becoming a professional and, instead, focus on
becoming a mother and wife. I also plan to watch and read interviews featuring victims
of child marriage, their parents and spouses to gain insight on their personal opinion
regarding the topic. This will help me understand what they believe is hindering
education and if they believe it relates to child marriage. The comparison between each
group?s beliefs will also show if young girls voluntarily give up school or are forced to.
The use of facts and statistics provided by humanitarian organizations, such as UNICEF
and Girls Not Brides, will also further strengthen my paper through their simplicity and
legitimacy. I am choosing to use these methods to expand on the information other
writers have provided and formulate my own opinion regarding my topic.
Education is a human right everyone deserves to exercise. With the prominence of child
marriage in developing countries, however, more young girls are being taken out of
school and into a man?s house. Although it is known that child marriage marks an end
to education, it is still not clear if school dropouts and child marriage are affecting each
other. I believe that this research will provide evidence that school dropouts and child
marriage are a direct correlation of each other. This is significant because it will show
how much of an influence child marriage has on a young girl?s life and not always for
the best. Not only will this information benefit families who might not understand the
consequences child marriage has on their young daughters, but also the general public,
who may not always be well informed about this issues. Young girls will also
understand that they have the right to be more than just a man?s wife, sister, daughter
and mother. They can become an independent individual. While child marriage should
be banned as a violation of human rights, education is a minimized example of how
child marriage can impact a girl?s life. Without schooling, young girls will not have the
tools and knowledge to hope for a better future and work for it.
