Correlation between Alcoholism and Parental Abuse

Correlation between Alcoholism and Parental Abuse
One problem that remains a serious concern for forensic psychologist is the abuse of
children by their alcoholic parents or guardians. Indeed this a serious problem that calls for
research and carefully study. There is a strong connection between the maltreatment of children
and alcoholism, especially where parents engage in harmful drinking habits. In terms, of
evidence for the existed of the problem, the World Health Organization in the year 2000 reported
deaths of more than 57,000 children below the age of 15 years in the whole world as a result of
maltreatment. The United States of America reported 906,000 cases of child maltreatment in the
year 2003 (WHO, 2014). Parental abuse and alcoholism is similarly associated with other
problems such as mental malfunctions and antisocial behaviors among children. Filov et al.
(2014) in their research study, observe that children of alcoholics are more prone to
psychological abuse and they are more likely to become alcoholics themselves. For example,
Filov et al. in their study showed that 82.2 percent of students living with alcoholic parents were
more likely to develop risky behaviors. The researchers noted that parental alcoholism leads to
child neglect and abuse, which leads to dysfunction of households.
The physical abuse on children can result in bruises, fractures as well as stress. In serious
cases, child maltreatment can cause fatalities. The World Health Organization (2014) shows that
a global trend of child sexual molestation as a result of alcoholism within 5 percent and eight
percent reported cases among men and women respectively. Victims of parental abuse are more
likely to become violent in their future. Therefore, child abuse and alcoholism can result in a
vicious cycle in a family generation. It is in this regard that the research will look into the
relationship between parental alcoholism and abuse.
