A Memorable Event in my Life
The narration here is a story about one of the most notable and unforgettable events in my
life. The incident happened on one Thursday morning in October 2015. The day before, I had
worked through the night preparing for an important test that I had to attend the following day,
so I woke up with plenty of sleep in my eyes. Maria, one of my childhood friends, had agreed to
pick me at the bus stage and drive me to School. I rushed out at about eight minutes to seven and
headed straight to the bus terminus. Just as I was rounding the last corner before reaching the
stage, I saw two men engaged in a fist fight so fiercely that they did not see me approaching. I
decided to keep my distance as I did not know who they were. Suddenly one of the men pulled
out a knife and drove it at blinding speed into the neck of the other man who was, apparently, too
exhausted to dodge.
Hot blood rushed through my spine as I witnessed the stabbed man groaning and writhing
on the ground in excruciating pain. I remained glued to the ground without the slightest hint of
what I would do in such astonishing circumstances. All I could see was a stream of hot blood
making its way diagonally across the tarmac road. My heart pumped so hard that I thought it
would break out of its cavity. Sweating profusely and shaking like a dry leaf in windy weather, I
amassed little energy and decided to find a way to help the dying man. His adversary had, by that
time, scampered away into the thicket around the road. I did not care because my concern only
focused on the poor man lying on the cold road-dying. I realized that the incident could have farreaching ramifications on my planned events that day and decided to call my friend Maria to
inform her about what had occurred.
Maria was still far from the stage and could not be of any help at that moment, so I
engaged my mental faculties in trying to find the best course of action. Thought of me at the
scene of a crime at the wrong time crossed my mind. I knew the consequences of being caught in
a crime scene without a clear explanation of the where and what about of the alleged criminal.
“These days the police do not take their time to investigate extensively, and they would just
arrest you without a doubt that you killed this man.” A voice said inside of me. I remained split
between helping the dying man and leaving him for the dead to save myself from the trouble of
having to make lengthy explanations to the police. Yes, there will definitely be lengthy
explanations with a thousand skeptical eyes of men in uniform glaring at me without the tiniest
figment of trust in my statements. After numerous internal exchanges, I decided that the life of
the man was more important than any considerations of personal safety at that moment.
I turned the bleeding giant of a man to see the chances of saving his life and was stunned
by the gaping hole in his neck and the massive flow of blood from the deep penetration by the
assailant’s knife. Just as I was about to pull my phone and make a call, a black station wagon
approached and was about to zoom away when I waved and screamed out my lungs asking the
driver to stop. The man was generous enough to stay a few meters ahead. I shouted asking him
for help in lifting the stabbed man, and he came and assisted me to put the battered man into the
car. On the way to the hospital, I was battling thoughts of what to tell the police when they
finally call me to make a statement. I knew they had to call me.
A few minutes past ten o’clock, the doctor came to where I seated with Thomas Greenthe man who drove us to the hospital in his black station wagon. I knew from the expression on
the doctor’s face that something was wrong. Seriously wrong. The man had survived the stab, but
the hospital had received a call from the police department to detain everyone involved. I knew
this was the beginning of what I had feared most. I wished I had left the man and went on to do
my day’s business.
Immediately two police officers emerged behind the doctor and directed Thomas and me
into their vehicle parked next to Thomas’ station wagon. Things happened so fast, and just as the
driver closed his door, a call came on radio call that the police had arrested a man carrying a
blood-stained knife near the site of the fight. My heart gave a long heave of thanksgiving to the
almighty. Thomas looked at me and smiled. The police arrested the assailant, and we only
proceeded to the police station to make statements and regain our freedom. Free at last, I was
glad I had made the right decision in a doubtful atmosphere to save a life. I later heard that the
man was guilty of attempted murder and sentenced to fifteen years in prison.
