Addition of Applied Molecular Techniques Course to the Biological Science Major
The field of biological sciences is a thrilling subject area. Biological science is a
dynamic field that has undergone rapid expansion over the years. On the other hand, studying
in colleges and universities in the United States is very costly. According to Briana
Boyington’s article “See 20 Years of Tuition Growth at National Universities” the average
cost of tuition for in-state, private and out of state universities has been increased by at least
200 percent! As a result, many families acquire loans to enroll in colleges to get their degrees.
Following the large amount of expenses they have, the students are always striving to manage
to pay government debts and live a decent life. In the long run, time is very limited thus
people are unable to find a good paying job to manage their expenses immediately after
finishing their education or even continue their education in graduate schools because the
biology bachelor’s curriculum coursework at many universities in United States cannot
prepare students adequately for what society outside of campus expects students to know and
have experience in. There must be addition of a required course, applied molecular
techniques to the current curriculum at California State Universities (CSU) to teach students
about all new biotechnological techniques that are on demand in job market or in research
facilities as well as working as part of a team, because without this class students will not be
very successful in landing in jobs and might have a very hard time in graduate school, since it
is expected from them to have some knowledge and background about on demand

Applied molecular techniques is a course that prepares students to learn many
different on demand molecular biology techniques in a period of time. The course contains
many mini projects that teaches students at least two or three on demand biological and
hands-on techniques. This course is very beneficial for students who want to further their
studies at a PhD level or examine other fields such as industrial and commercial, the program
is a starting point. For instance, if a student wants to venture into the field of healthcare, the
course will offer both hands-on learning along with the comprehension of the ways to partake
research in a thorough manner.
Hence, addition of applied molecular techniques course increases the opportunities for
graduates. The course offers an in depth comprehension of biosciences. Knowledge gained in
the study of the course can advance a career. Biology is analyzed in depth at the very basic
molecular level along with the study of organisms’ structures. Students will also get to learn
proteins, genetics and nucleic acids. Students will also gain information on diseases origins.
Students will learn how to alter organisms for the purpose of creating potential cures and
easing diseases. To give an example, in a project students are asked to see if human cells can
act like bacterial cells and kill viruses? During the course, students will have a chance to get
exposed to microbiological techniques and understand how microbial organisms live. One of
the very main things that students can learn is how bacterial cells protect themselves against
viruses. (which is through a protein that cuts viruses) Then the next question can be how can
human cells act like bacteria and protect themselves against viruses? Then students can grow
human and bacterial cells using aseptic techniques. Next step would be to changing cells by
introducing a new gene (for example, changing a human cell to use a gene in bacteria that
cuts DNA for their benefit and kill viruses), and then analyze the whole genetic information
of the cells using sequencing and bioinformatics tools. Basically during the applied molecular
techniques class, all of the students of the class had a chance to work as groups, find their

areas of interest and were exposed to the new techniques that are being used by great research
and medical facilities.
Additionally, adding the applied molecular techniques course will enhance a
multidisciplinary course that will improve our research and development skills. Applied
molecular techniques course will also enhance the ability of the class to think logically and be
able to thoroughly scrutinize content we are exposed to. It will enable us to question the basic
tenets of life and the realities of life, beside learning the techniques to find an answer for
those possible questions.
Furthermore, pursuing an additional molecular techniques course has intrinsic value.
The course is beneficial as employers are constantly on the lookout for skills learnt at the
school. Molecular techniques will expose us to more opportunities as it will enable us to gain
an in-depth comprehension of biosciences. Molecular techniques enable one to understand
biosciences at a basic molecular level (Nehm et al, Pg 264). It explores the origins of diseases
and how to make changes to organisms at the molecular level in order to come up with
treatment and or intervention programs. Along with preparing students for a diversity of
paths, adding the course will help in the comprehension of both molecular and cell biology
which enhance decision making even on daily life activities such as diet and health.
Adding the applied molecular techniques course in our major will be the basis for
different opportunities in pharmaceutical, medical and agricultural fields since students will
concentrate knowledge on molecular techniques as well as cellular processes.
During a recent discussion over lunch break I initiated a discussion regarding how I
had decided to want to learn more about cell signaling (the way that cells speak to each
other). Surprisingly, 8 out of the 9 students at the table concurred that they wanted to do so
too. They acknowledged that they found cancer topics particularly appealing because they

want to know the reality behind the killer disease around the globe. Cancer is a compelling
mystery that has not been solved for decades. We hope to be part of the team that will reveal
the mystery surrounding the killer disease. Studying will Molecular Biology and using the
molecular techniques course will help the class develop both critical and analytical skills
applicable for use in biological aspects learnt in our major. We even came up with idea that
with using cells that we culture and providing different conditions and comparing them to a
cancerous cells, we can analyze their pattern of signaling and understand the difference
between cancer cells and normal cells in different conditions.
In summary, adding applied molecular techniques course to our major will ensure
students learn a comprehensive course of study across greater lengths of scientific inquiry.
Since it is an advanced course, students will utilize current published research to get
information on molecular cell biology and cell dynamics and will train students on new on
demand techniques to investigate questions and work as a big team, global scientists. Also
students will have more chance on landing into jobs or getting admitted into graduate school
when they include all these techniques in their resume.
