Research Paper Assignment – EBS-021 – FALL 2017
The final assignment, on which we will be working on until the final class, is the
Research Paper.
Your Research Paper will be 3-to-4 page paper focusing on a critical argument
about a subject that we have explored this semester in our essays. You must
include perspectives from at least THREE books, journals, magazines, papers,
articles, interviews, surveys, and newspapers in your paper (the amount of
internet-based sources is not limited, but will not be allowed until the
requirements noted above are fulfilled).
The MLA system of documentation, both within the body of the text, as well as at
the end in the form of a Works Cited page, must be used to report the citations
(we have covered on multiple occassions how to do so this semester; you can
always find guides to proper MLA formatting through the links provided in this
course and through the Library website. We will not cover this crucial process
any further in the course; you will be reponsible for correct citations and a
proper MLA works-cited page for this assignment).
You must submit the following in order for you to receive a passing grade:
Writing/reading assignments: The RPQ, outline and annotations, rough draft, and
final draft. Each portion will receive a grade that will count toward the final grade
for this assignment. If you fail to turn in any of these items by their duedates, or fail to complete any part of the research project, you will receive a
failing grade for the entire assignment, no exceptions.
The topics for the Resarch Paper are related to the three major essays that were
written this semester. You may chose from ONE of the following:
•
The impact of laws on our lives
•
Privacy rights
•
The Right-to-Die debate
You will choose a topic and then create a thesis statement for an argument that
you will defend (“Taking a Stand”). The thesis statement can be anything except
a thesis statement that you have already used this semester. You cannot
“continue” or revisit any of the essay that you have written this semester for the
Research Paper.
The first assignmemt for this project is to fill out and submit the Research Paper
Questionnaire (RPQ). This document has four parts to it. I will give you a copy
in class during the class after conferences regarding the Mastery Test. ALL of
the steps must be completely and correctly filled out in order for you to receive
credit and move onto the next step of the Research Paper assignment.
IF YOU SKIP A STEP OF THE RESEARCH PAPER ASSIGNMENT, YOU WILL
FAIL THE ENTIRE ASSIGNMENT, NO EXCEPTIONS. REMEMBER THAT
THE RESEARCH PAPER IS 20% OF YOUR FINAL GRADE.
The RPQ is comprised of the following four parts:
I. Topic you’ve chosen to consider.
II. Why have you chosen this topic?
III. FIVE questions you have about the topic that you will answer through
research.
IV. In a grammatically correct and carefully edited paragraph, describe the focus
and approach that you have tentatively elected to present in your paper. Include
the thesis statement for the analysis part of the paper. Do not submit an
outline. Be specific.
The COMPLETED RPQ is due in Moodle ½ hour before the day we go to the
Library, and in the Library.
The next step in this process after the RPQ will be to research the three sources
that you will incorporate into your paper and then to fully annotate them, as well
as the outline (I will provide you with a template).
