Mini Research Paper: Cultural Awareness
It is suggested that this assignment be introduced during week 6 and discussed in detail during
week 11. This will provide students with the opportunity to engage with diversity related topics
during the first half of the semester and prepare them for the critical thinking that is needed for
this assignment.

The student will be able to locate 2 articles (short empirical studies) that provide
opposing viewpoints of a topic of interest to the student related to cultural awareness
and/or Diversity issues.
The student will be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills in writing through their
application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of the selected articles.
The student will be able to explain, in writing, the differing perspectives.
Assignment Details:
Propose a topic of interest in writing to your instructor. The topic should be related to your local
community. Suggestions include, but are not limited to: poverty, race, religion, gender
identification, sexual orientation, and crime.
Locate 2 articles (short empirical studies) that provide opposing views of the topic
Formulate a topic sentence
Create an outline
Expand the outline into a 3 to 4 page paper that critically analyzes the topic using the articles as
support
The required page number does not include the title page and reference page
The final paragraph of the essay should reflect how the knowledge attained has reinforced or
changed your perspective of the topic
Sources must be cited and referenced according to the instructor’s preference (APA, MLA,
Chicago)
This paper will be due in parts:
