Triple click your mouse anywhere in this paragraph to replace this text with your
introduction. Often the most important paragraph in the entire essay, the introduction grabs the
reader’s attention—sometimes a difficult task for academic writing. When writing an
introduction, some approaches are best avoided. Avoid starting sentences with “The purpose of
this essay is . . .” or “In this essay I will . . .” or any similar flat announcement of your intention
or topic. Read more: Center for Writing Excellence>Tutorials and Guides>Essay
Development>Guidelines for Writing Academic Essays.
Level One Heading
Replace the level one heading with the words for your heading. The heading must be in
bold font. Headings are a necessary part of helping your audience track the sub-topics discussed
in the body of the essay or report.
Be sure to indent the first line of each paragraph between five and seven spaces by
pressing the Tab key one time on the keyboard. In addition, remember to double space the entire
paper using the double space functionality in Word. This template is already formatted for
double spacing. Read more: Center for Writing Excellence>Tutorials and Guides>Software
Tutorials and Guides>Formatting Tutorial for APA.
In addition, keep in mind an academic essay should contain at least five paragraphs,
which includes the introduction (introductory paragraph), the body (which is generally at least 3
paragraphs), and the conclusion (generally one paragraph). Most well-developed paragraphs
contain at least 3-5 sentences, one of which is the topic sentence. Limit each body paragraph to
one sub-topic.
3
Level Two Heading
Replace the level two heading with the words for your heading. The heading must be in
bold font.
Conclusion
The closing paragraph is designed to bring the reader to your way of thinking if you are
writing a persuasive essay, to understand relationships if you are writing a comparison/contrast
essay, or simply to value the information you provide in an informational essay. The closing
paragraph summarizes the key points from the supporting paragraphs without introducing any
new information.

Hotel Strategic Plan
Customer satisfaction is key to the success of any hospitality business.
Therefore to both maintain a base and increase market share, hospitality managers
need to implement assessment strategies to analyze and monitor their service
performance. This process often begins with the development of the operations
strategic plan (in-text citation). ……………these elements should align with the
operations mission and vision statements to maintain core values and ensure success
(in-text citation). Businesses that take these planning steps and develop ……………….
tend to enjoy marked success over their competition (in-text citation).
Mission and Vision Statements
Generally a mission statement is an expression of what a company hopes to
achieve and how they will………. (in-text citation). For example, a company may have a
core value that ……………. So it defines the purpose and primary objectives related to
…………… and team values (in-text citation).
On the other hand, a vision statement outlines where the company wants ……….
(in-text citation). In essence it communicates both the purpose and values of …….. (intext citation). Both of these need to be aligned with the companies values in order to
deliver………….
Internal and External Factors
Successful companies know that their strategic plans can be impacted by both
external and internal influencing factors, and thus need to plan for both (in-text citation).
External influences include elements that are often outside the companies’ direct
3
control, such as………….(in-text citation). These events can have a strong impact but
can also be ……….
Internal influences are often events the company has control over such
as…………..(in-text citation). These are often ongoing issues that the company

at both internal and external …… Doing so will produce a more beneficial and ………….
Analysis of a Hotel Strategic Plan
The key factors involved in the development of a successful strategic plan,
including the potential impact of both internal and external factors, are best illustrated
when they are examined within a real-world business scenario, such as the Residence
Inn Hotel in Costa Mesa, California. The Residence Inn, Costa Mesa, is an extendedstay lodging brand for Marriott……….. (in-text citation). The extended-stay segment of
the market focuses on five to seven night stays, but often includes……….(in-text

External and Internal Factors Impacting The Hotel
The Residence Inn, Costa Mesa, is located in Orange County, California, and is
within a highly competitive lodging market that surrounds John Wayne Airport (in-text
citation). As one might expect, competition is at the top of the hotels external
influences. However, because of the nature of its target market, its actual competitive
set is …………….. (in-text citation). Other external influences include ………… (in-text
citation). The latter is of critical importance for management to include in the analysis
because it………
Internal influences at the hotel …………. (in-text citation). Customer reviews seem
to indicate that housekeeping service is high but can ………….. (in-text citation). This
would seem to indicate that …………… is a significant internal issue that management
can ………..(in-text citation). Another internal influence is ………………(in-text citation).
By taking these internal and external influences into account, management can make
effective improvements and plan for potential issues even when they are out of their
direct control.
The New Strategic Plan to Improve Customer Satisfaction
Since customers are booking longer stays and are aware of the companies stated
claim of “exceeding guests expectations …………….”, management needs to
continually focus on high guest satisfaction scores when developing their strategic
plans. Keeping in mind the hotels stated mission, vision, and core values, and after
reviewing the external and internal influencers that can impact the hotel, management
can identify some …………… These key elements should be addressed in any new
plan.

The remaining paragraphs have been omitted, as they are specific to the hotel and
the student’s analysis. The student goes into detail on the three elements and actions
they identified from their research to be impactful on their selected hotels guest
satisfaction. Their analysis is specific to both the hotel and local market.
Conclusion
In the lodging sector of the hospitality industry, customer satisfaction is key to
both maintaining core accounts and to growing market share. Consequently, hospitality
managers need to implement assessment strategies to both analyze and monitor their
service performance, and make quality improvements wherever possible. The
development of a strategic plan is critical to these endeavors, and its elements should
align with the operations mission and vision statements. By aligning these management
can ensure their action steps maintain the companies core values while providing their
customers with exceptional guest experiences.

Hotel Strategic Plan
In this introductory section, provide some context for your reader. Specifically, introduce
them to some of the key concepts, the important role they play, and why. This should be done in
the third person and is meant to peak the interest of the reader. It should contain in-text citation
to support ideas. Keep it general and do not mention or discuss the business being analyzed /
hypothetical until your analysis section below.
For example: “Customer satisfaction is key to the success of any hospitality business.
Therefore to both maintain a base and increase market share, hospitality managers need to
implement assessment strategies to analyze and monitor their service performance. This process
often begins with the development of the operations strategic plan (Shoemaker & Shaw, 2007).
……………these elements should align with the operations mission and vision statements to
maintain core values and ensure success (Shoemaker & Shaw, 2007).”
The key with any introductory section is to briefly share the importance of the key
concepts in the paper, encouraging the reader to explore it further!
The Strategic Plan
In this section you would want to further define and explain the concepts you mentioned
in your introductory section, in other words define what it is (cite the source for the definition)
and explain in general terms how it works. If you feel the content needs to be broken down into
subsections you may want to add Level-2 headings. See the standard APA Template for an
example. The organizational key here is to first define and explain all key concepts before
starting your analysis section! Assume your reader has no prior knowledge of these concepts, so
you need to explain them all before launching into your hypothetical / real world business
3
analysis! Do not mention or discuss the business being analyzed / hypothetical until after you
have completed this section (or sections)!
If there are additional key concepts explored in the paper they should each be given their
own titled section for explanation. I have included at least one more below for you.
Mission and Vision Statements
This section is just like the one above, designed to provide the reader with enough context
to understand your forthcoming analysis. Provide them with a definition and explanation of a
mission and vision statement, why they are important and how / why they should align with
company values. Again do not mention or discuss the business being analyzed / hypothetical
until after you have completed this section (or sections)!
Analysis of a Hotel Strategic Plan
This section of your paper is where the vast majority of points are earned, and should be
the longest section of the paper (at least one full page if not many)! As with any written analysis,
it should contain a few district parts. In the first paragraph (or few paragraphs) you will need to
provide the reader with some context, explaining some facts and details about the specific
business / hypothetical to be explored in the analysis. This should be followed by your analysis,
where you apply the key concepts of the paper to the situation / hypothetical, and support your
ideas with well-reasoned ideas and supporting research. Lastly, you will want to come to some
sort of conclusion or make recommendations based on your analysis (this differs from the overall
conclusion to your paper, which is just a rehash of the concepts from the introductory paragraph).
The following is a simple example of an opening sentence for transitioning into your analysis.
Feel free to copy / use it if you want just be sure to change the hotel name 🙂
The key factors involved in the development of a successful strategic plan, including the
4
potential impact of both internal and external factors, are best illustrated when they are examined
within a real-world business scenario, such as the The Run Down Shack case study. The Run
Down Shack is a two-star resort located next to the Yuba River in Downieville, California
(Reference Cited). The resort has…… [Provide the reader with enough facts to understand the
situation then start your analysis].
The (insert hotel name) Mission, Vision, and Core Values
Under this Level Two Heading you want to share your research on the hotel with regards to
its mission and vision statements and how they align with the operations core values. Be sure to
cite all sources where research information is used.
Internal and External Factors Impacting The Hotel
Under this Level Two Heading you want to share your research on the internal and external
factors that are / may impact the hotel and thus must be addressed in your strategic plan below.
Be sure to cite all sources where research information is used.
The New Strategic Plan to Improve Customer Satisfaction
Under this Level Two Heading you want to share your strategic plan to improve customer
satisfaction and increase repeat customers. You have already laid out the foundation of the plan
in the first two sections above by identifying the companies mission, vision, and core values, as
well as how specific factors may impact the operation (both internally and externally). So here
you simply need to explain your plan and supply reasoned analysis as to why each suggested
action should succeed.
Conclusion
The closing paragraph is designed to bring the reader to your way of thinking if you are
writing a persuasive essay, to understand relationships if you are writing a comparison/contrast
5
essay, or simply to value the information you provide in an informational essay. The closing
paragraph summarizes the key points from the supporting paragraphs without introducing any
new information.
