Reflection on Group Project
Collaborative efforts lead to innovative approaches to projects that establish new
processes to accomplish key tasks and shared ideas on varied responsibilities. Like any other
work setting, collaboration in the projects has advantages and disadvantages and understanding
these ups and downs is the best towards addressing any conflict that may crop up as a result
(Binder 2012). For example, during the University of Arizona campus health project, I came to
learn of the ups and downs that people may face during collaborative project work. First, besides
the fact that we all knew that we had been allocated to be in the same group, it was difficult to
schedule on a time that was convenient for every member especially because we were all
students with other school plan and work. Despite, having difficulty in managing time what felt
motivating and the better part was that there would be a division of labor where different ideas
brought together would make it easy to complete the project. Working together also seemed
conflicting in the working styles as there was a set of responsibility creating some conflict within
the individual group. It was a challenging project at first, but I came to realize that collaborating
with different people on the project made it easy especially because there was a greater sense of
creative input. We could be able to tap into different individual’s reasoning and with a collection
of different ideas, and approaches to the project, we were brainstormed and spurred into
innovative results.

The project was a good way to learn about collaborative writing which was a good
teaching about how to write. I learned new ways to introduce ideas in my writing and the phrases
that I never used in my writing before. We created an environment that each contributor had
almost equal ability in contribution. The project also enabled me to learn how to conduct good
research. This is because one can be in the University had a shallow idea on the facilities that the
Campus Health offers. The project enabled to learn that using collaborative writing tools can
provide substantial advantages to projects ranging from increased user commitment to easier,
more effective and efficient contribution to community literacy. The project felt so much
involving, and this is because every individual had a direct contribution which made a difference
and made everyone attached to the outcomes. Creating such an environment created a
comfortable environment that everyone could use his/her time, effort, and personal pride into the
final product that resulted in a better outcome. Collaborative learning is based on tools that
enabled participants to contribute comfortably and when everyone contributes participants are
quick to verify their contributions towards contributing the work and writing (Speck 2008).
It was very enjoyable learning about other people’s style of writing towards learning
being an efficient writer. For example, besides the fact that some participants were faster than I
was in generating new ideas, I took it as a challenge and an inspiration towards learning new
ways of improving myself. It was a fun and social way of writing. It was also enjoyable working
on the project because the collaborative writing and research lightened the load on everybody
involved. It was sometimes difficult to find information regarding the inner facilities of the
Campus health, especially on the random information selections. The research was split up into
the group, so that made it a little bit easier. Sometimes we experienced some conflicts as some
people were considered to do the majority of the research and this is because we all never had the

same research and analysis ability. We did not share our information all that much to start of the
project, and that made it a little more difficult to write the paper according to my consideration,
and this made it difficult to cooperate on the group presentation. Trying to divide up the work
taught me that it is a lot more difficult to get a project done in a group if everyone in it is not
committed to it at the same level.
I have learned that in a class group dynamic it is hard to get things done efficiently if
there isn’t someone that cares enough to take the leadership role and assign work to different
people. This is because not everyone can volunteer to do much work which makes it very
difficult to make the more intensive part of the project done. Through the project, I also learned
that in writing and research I should never enjoy relying on other people for me to get something
done. It should be an opportunity to learn in improving my writing skills but also understand that
there is more effective way of getting a message across than always trying to do them by myself.
What is most important in such a collaborative writing is ensuring to set a strategy that well
accomplishes things, and I have drawn from this experience that effective research requires
commitment and understanding among all the participants. This means there is need first to
coordinate the research with all my group members and find best ways to best present the ideas. I
hope to use this experience to grow as a learner and as a writer during research.
