During the 2012 Presidential race you saw several commercials for the two major candidates;
Obama and Romney. Your final assignment is to write and film a 60 second YouTube ad for either
2012 Presidential candidates. You will choose between Obama positive, Obama contrasting,
Romney positive, and Romney contrasting. Your objective is to create a better advertisement than
what you saw in 2012 for these candidates. This assignment will be graded based on how well you
synthesize the strategies you have learned from this class into the content of the video, not on video
production values.
Please remember that messaging is the most key aspect of your campaign. So you are essentially
developing the overall campaign message after using the message box to identify options.
Remember, a message must incorporate the 3 C’s (concise, contrasting, clear) for your message to
be effective.

A storyboard allows you to sketch out, step-by-step, the audio and the visual aspects of the
video.
o Storyboard software suggestions: StoryboardThat (free), StoryBoard Pro (free), and
PowerPoint and Google Slides.
o You can also Google “storyboards” in both the web and images. There are thousands of
examples of different types of storyboards online.
Before you start the storyboard you need to write a script for the video. You will not submit this
script for grading, but think of it as a living document that may be adjusted as the video unfolds.
Always ask yourself, is this video staying true to your message/thesis statement?
Through storyboarding you will identify needed actors, scripts, locations, stock footage and the
various shots you will need to complete your video.
