Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has become a widely identified, discussed, and
researched disorder in children and adults in more recent years. Often referred to as ADHD,
Attention-deficit Hyperactivity disorder is described as a chronic condition that inhibits
individuals from acting according to generally accepted behavior in various activities that can
affect their relationships, self-esteem, and performance adversely. ADHD symptoms are as
follows: restlessness, figidity, difficulty completing tasks, disorganized, unable to maintain
sustained attention, disruptive in a variety of private, public, or semi-public settings like a
classroom, impulsive, and distractive to those around them. ADHD is considered a mental
disorder that is included within IDEA and covered in required inclusive classrooms for special
education services. The goal of this research is to identify factors that heighten or lessen ADHD
discharge and effective ways of helping students overcome destructive ADHD tendencies.
ADHD is one of the most researched topics in the social sciences. Much of the reason
lies in the mystery of ADHD, much like autism. Its symptoms can be identified fairly easily
(symptoms can be more difficult in girls) but its causes and treatments are wide ranging. Many
unanswered questions remain with ADHD. The causes for ADHD range from heredity,
cognitive boredom, and poor parenting to inadequate classroom management, abnormal brain
development, or comorbid disorders. Treatments include medications (stimulants and
nonstimulants), cognitive behavioral interventions, and behavioral interventions that include
token rewards. All these have some substance to their findings, but none can say definitely that
the cause or treatment is 100% accurate. More research must be completed to help add to the
information that we know. But what might we be overlooking or ignoring in the discussion?
Multiple interventions are offered for symptoms, but can they be implemented in a general
education classroom with the reality of time and energy?

Topic Choice Report
In my profession I work with students who exhibit ADHD symptoms on a daily
occurrence. I see how it affects them in their view of themselves, their relationships, and how it
makes a classroom more challenging to operate when a teacher is constantly dealing with
behavior issues stemming from ADHD. Part of the reason why I want to study ADHD is
because I do not think I manage it well enough in my classroom. At times the disruptions and
frustrations of the students can become overwhelming if interventions are not in place to support
the student and the teacher. A wide range of perceptions, opinions, and cure are associated with
ADHD. Some say it is cured by a more strict parenting style and a belt. Some say it’s a problem
with self-perception, impulsivity, or a general educational environment that has become too rigid
for active children. I have a wide range of these children in my 3rd grade classroom. I want to
know more about ADHD, how I can implement interventions effectively, and provide these
students a better chance of overcoming what may be preventing them from success now or in the
future.
