YOUTH VIOLENCE IN THE UNITED STATES
2
Youth violence in the United States has become rampant in the past years, therefore,
raising much concern on possible measures to deal with this menace.
This paper mainly focuses on homicide victimization as well as perpetration among the
youth over the last decade; the main risk factors associated with violence and also summarize
prevention efforts to reduce violence among the youth. Previous research indicates that violence
among the youth increases during adolescence and young adult (Reichel, 2002). Factors leading
to this include early onset of aggressive behavior in childhood, exposure to violence, social
problem-solving skill deficits, negative peer influences, access to firearms, poor parenting
practices and family functioning, family disruption and social isolation as well as neighborhoods
characterized by high rates of poverty. Efforts related to addressing some of the primary risk
factors relating to violence are underway in the United States though there is need to evaluate
and confirm program effectiveness.
Among many cities in the United States, there has been an increase in juvenile violence,
therefore, heightening the sense of personal risk experienced among those living as well as
working within the cities hence strongly contributing to widespread fear of crime in general. In
the recent past number of juvenile homicide arrest rate, homicide victimization rate, juvenile
homicide related to guns as well as murder among 15 and 16 years of age has been found to
increase with more than 100%. To add to this, the number of nonwhite juvenile arrest for drug
offenses has doubled over the years.
A working hypothesis has recently been tabled about juvenile violence and indicates that
after crack cocaine hit the market in 1985, it brought change about illegal buying of drugs habits
as well as patterns of distribution. In the attempt to a high number of transactions, a majority of

youth primarily African Americans within center-city areas got recruited to the drug market.
Because it was not easy for them to ask for protection from the police, they had to seek guns to
protect themselves and their valuable wares. Tight networking among these youths through
schools as well as streets led to the quick diffusion of guns among the larger youthful community
not only for self-defense but also for status. Due to guns presence among the youth in the United
States fights among the youth rapidly shift from fist fights to the shooting. Many youth people
carrying guns resulted in escalating process of carrying guns, and this has led to great prosperity
in many disputes for any of the parties involved to use his gun before the other does. Diffusion
hypothesis, therefore, suggests growth of juvenile homicide as a result of the adoption of
behavior that is an epidemic in the drug industry within the entire community (Blumberg, 1979).
In the attempt to address the problem of violence among the youth, therefore, I
recommend the following issues as solutions to this menace. The first is guns on the street and
because carrying guns among the civilian population is illegal almost everywhere in the world,
getting a gun out of the hands of juvenile population in the United States will require muchfocused enforcement of the existing legislation. Federal governments, therefore, have the
responsibility of offering technical assistance to localities that need help in pursuing this strategy.
Even if success is attained regarding stopping the flow of guns to and from the drug markets,
there is still a big worry about the guns that are already in the hands of youth out in the streets.
The second solution is on the guns in the market and due to this; illicit gun markets must be
controlled tightly especially those that sell to youths in the cities. Law enforcement agencies
should not only focus on drug market but also illegal firearms. Clear federal responsibility
should be established as gun trafficking is interstate. The third solution to this problem is
treatment and prevention for which the focus should be on shrinking the size of drug markets

through siphoning the various demands for drugs (Chandler, Fletcher & Volkow, 2009). There
is need to increase resources as well as the effort put into treatment and prevention and also
seeking ways to expose certified addicts to proper treatment programs like those supported by
the SSI program. The last solution is socialization of the youth for which many of them see no
hope in their economic future therefore willing to take all possible risks to gain respect as well as
earn an income. Disenfranchised youth, therefore, offer ready recruits for any illicit markets that
present themselves.
In conclusion, therefore, it is important that policymakers examine facts that reflect
previous changes in the past decade involving juveniles in violence with much emphasis on
violence aspects that is probably most fear-inducing juvenile homicide.
