READ THE QUESTIONS BELOW BEFORE VIEWING THE FILM!!!!
Note: The following are overall summary type questions so take notes and then get your responses together. Note that the
questions do not necessarily relate to the order of events in the film. For some questions you may need to do some outside

disease?
How was the disease in the film transmitted? What every-day human activities make us vulnerable to
lethal infectious diseases such as the one described in the film? Why is it important to understand how
infectious diseases are transmitted?
What human activities enable wild creatures to come into contact with domesticated animals and
humans?
What is the Ro (R-naught) referred to in the film? What is its significance? Give some examples of R0
that would be typical of; eg, influenza, Ebola, measles. Refer to handout.
Take note of numbers in the film whenever you hear numbers, write them down here. We will take
these numbers and calculate mortality rates.

Think about how YOU might react (assume you are an ordinary citizen, not a public health worker).
Was quarantine used in the outbreak described in the film? If so, how? Review the difference between
isolation and quarantine.
In the film, a charlatan sells a cure. What was the cure and why do you think people are so willing to
listen to these individuals rather than to reliable public health information/authorities? What is the role
of the internet during pandemics or other disaster emergency situations? Describe good vs. not so good
roles.
Communication by public health officials is extremely important. Give examples from the film. Give
reasons for why the public would be skeptical of information it receives from public health officials.
What can public health officials do to prepare us for the inevitability of pandemics? What is done at
local levels currently? Use information from what you learned from our local public health speakers.
What organizations deal with this at the federal and international levels currently?
The movies diabolical villain is an actual virus. See if you can find this very real virus and the disease it
causes. Hints: Malaysia, bats to pigs to humans, respiratory disease and encephalitis, more than 100
deaths, 1990s. Note that currently this disease has a low Ro. What does that mean? What could happen
to change this?
