Defining Deception
? Deception is an intentional act in which senders
knowingly transmit messages to mislead
another by fostering false impressions, beliefs,
or understandings, or by actively concealing the
truth
? Deception includes more than just lying; it also
includes actions such as concealment,
exaggeration, and equivocation

Ekman and Friesen?s Leakage Hypothesis
? According to this hypothesis, deception is
associated with a host of internal physiological,
emotional, and cognitive response that ?leak?
out into external displays.
? Deceivers try to control these cues (deception
cues), but some leak out anyway (leakage cues)
? Some channels are ?leakier? than others, and
may therefore provide the best clues about
whether deception is occurring

Interpersonal Deception Theory
This theory is based on three broad ideas:
1. Deception is an interdependent process that
involves both senders (deceivers) and receivers,
with both people?s communication affecting the
other?s.
2.To understand deception, people must take the
situation, communication modality (telephone,
email, face-to-face), culture, and relationship
between the two people into account.

3. Both deceivers and receivers engage in strategic
(deliberate) and nonstrategic (unintended) activity
during deception.
— Strategic behaviors include: smiling to look friendly and
honest; keeping still to avoid fidgeting
— Nonstrategic behaviors include: leaked negative vocal
affect, blinking, or unintentional postural shifts

Deception Detection
? Overall accuracy rate of 54% in studies with a
lie/truth option
? Rather than looking at any one specific cue, it is
advisable to compare a person?s ?normative?
behavior with their current behavior
? Still, there is no foolproof method for detecting
deception, in part because there are many
complexities and biases that affect communication
between deceivers and receivers.
