Running head: DBRG 200 POSITION ESSAY
DBRG 200 Position Essay
The little prince from a little planet that is barely the size of a house in size
decides to explore other planets. He leaves his home, the asteroid, which he loved and
protected and decides to explore and see what happens in the rest of the planets due to
invasion by loneliness when the only rose he loved lied and disappointed him. His
exploration brings him across various characters in which he sees the grow-ups as odds
except for the asteroid in which he meets the lamplighter working selflessly and with
determination towards his work. The novel reveals some issues that make the adult world
look strange (Fukuda, 1993).
Firstly. Each of the asteroids where the prince visits are occupied by a single
inhabitant, with each assuming and playing a role on the planet. In the first asteroid he
visits, the inhabitant of the planet is a king who is claiming to be ruling the universe
despite lack of subjects for him to rule. This is a strange world because we would expect
to find a king reigning in a land where he has subjects to rule. Secondly, the prince moves
to another tiny asteroid where he finds a conceited man who happens to see everyone else
to be his admirer. This is another strange world. First, we would not expect a man who is
living in a place that has no other people to expect admiration because there are no people
to do so. Secondly, even if there were people on the planet, we would expect them to
applaud a person for specific values and not a person seeing himself so important that
other people admire him. In other words, this is a world of a single man who is living in
More so, the prince moves to another adult world where he meets a drunkard man
living is stupor. The main reason that this man drink is to forget the shame of himself
being an alcoholic. This is strange. The shame of drunkenness should not be eliminated
by drinking more alcohol to erase the shame but by stopping drinking completely and
collecting a person’s life. Ironically, this man just drinks every time to eliminate the
shame. Strangely in another planet, a businessman counts the stars with greed like they
are his treasures. Stars are heavenly bodies that no man has access. This is a
representation of the greed that drives most of the people in the present day. Finally, a
geographer who is not knowledgeable about the geography of the place in which he lives
just sits in his office while we would expect to see him being the one exploring his place
and the planets beyond him. Indeed, the last point we would expect a geographer to be
found is in an office after collecting the field data on the geography of places. The prince
finds strange things from adults in each of the places he goes, and he has nothing to learn
from any of them except the lamplighter because of their strange lifestyles (Ryan, 2010).
A normal behavior conforms to the most common behavior in our society today.
The novel on the little prince presents various cases of the normal behavior. For example,
the tendency of the little prince to leave his homeland and explore the other planets is a
normal for people of his age brackets in the society today. At the transition stage,
children tend to explore various issues surrounding their lives. At some point in life, they
settle down, having acquired diverse knowledge and information from the rest of the
world. It is also normal in the current society to find drunkard persons because of
frustrations in life. However, this is usually the wrong way of addressing the issues
affecting them as we see in the novel where a man drinks to avoid the shame of
drunkenness. The pilot and the little prince interacted the first time they met and
coexisted well in the desert before the two parted ways for their respective home. They
assisted one another and shared information as they fought for their survival in the desert.
This is a normal behavior that would be exhibited in the society as well. The character of
the fox is also normal. The fox met and advised the little prince on the secrets of life that
make him realize that he loved the rose he had left at his home. This makes him miss
home as he begins to even worry about the welfare of the rose (Bembenutty, 2007).
I believe the little prince is a hero. The little prince explores many parts of the
universe as opposed to many other people of higher social class, age and education levels
compared to the little prince. The little prince navigates through to other asteroids where
he finds adults from who he had nothing to do. Geographer he met in one asteroid did not
even know the geography of his place despite his line of qualification. Besides, he never
bothered but remained in office. The fact that the little prince explored the rest parts of
the world makes him a hero. He comes from other people who beat him in age but finds
none of them doing anything constructive. One man is claiming to be a king in a land
where there are no people. The other man is living a life of alcoholism because he has
been frustrated by alcohol. Another man yet concerns himself with admiration that other
people have towards him and finally the businessman who greedily looks at the stars of
the sky. None of these things that the persons the little prince is doing constructively.
Furthermore, the little prince has lived a life that makes him a hero in his asteroid.
Despite his age, he protected his planet by ensuring that bad seeds did not grow on the
planet. Besides, he used to manage the baobab trees so that they could not overrun the
land. This shows that the little prince understands and guards his land passionately as
well as the plants that grow in there, making him a hero (Bembenutty,2010).
At some point in life, the little prince develops loneliness. People would develop
to this scenario differently including drinking alcohol like one man that the little prince
encountered. However, he decides to go out to the other parts of the world and look for
people, animals and maybe plants so that he can widen his knowledge about them. This
brings him across people who are living meaningless and senseless lives before he
reaches on planet earth where he has a lot to learn. All through though, he is dearly in
love with a rose that he had left at his home asteroid. He had great concern for the
welfare and security of his beloved rose all through his tour, but he hopes about its safety.
At some point, the little prince makes a hard decision. He decides to forgo the good
friends he encountered on planet earth and go back to his home planet. His way back
home is, however not easy because he had to die from the poisonous bite of a snake. The
pilot misses the little prince after his death back home (Bembenutty, 2010). I believe the
prince’s death portrays him as a hero. This is because the reasons for his decision to
allow the poisonous snake bite was to give him a chance to go back home and protect the
rose he loved and to also guard his home planet. Heroes will always come back home.
