Writing assignment for drama analysis

The goal of this assignment is to generate material in a form that is widely used within the production of theatre, materials that are provided to potential audience members in order to shape their understanding of the work, provide background or other useful material, deepen their engagement with the experience, and broaden their understanding of the relevant contexts informing the play and the production.Your goal is to generate 1500 words of material that accomplishes one or more of these tasks. The first step in the process is to determine which work you want to engage with.Your choices are Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A View from the Bridge, Gibraltar, Fences by August Wilson, Viet rock by Megan Terry, or Vietgone by Qui Nguyen.Fences can be found in the Black Drama Database, Viet rock can be found in the Twentieth Century Drama Database, Vietgone can be found in the February 2017 issue of American Theatre (all of which can be located through a library search). You will then want to think about what you want to share with your audience. There are three questions here: 1) who specifically comprises your audience 2) the specific aspects of your production 3) what specifically you want to share with them to enhance their experience.I want you to specify your audience for the materials, which will help you determine both the choice of materials and the language used to convey the materials. Examples of audiences might include: an audience for a theatre production, an audience for a professional regional theater, an audience for a community theater, a specifically tailored audience such as a group of seniors from your high school, a group of students from a specific class or club or community, or a specific group of people that have shared an experience or have a specific set of interests, knowledge, or lack of knowledge. What you include should be chosen in relation to your interest and should be a reflection of any specific aspects of your production. You can assume a generic production (ie a production that uses the script and traditional casting methods and aesthetics) or you can make a specific intervention (alternative casting or aesthetics) should you choose. What you include should be reflected in the goal for your production: why are you doing this play? So, the first piece of writing is background and context.
The next step would be to create the three
pieces of material and provide accessible materials that will engage the target
audience.
You may choose to include material produced
by others (visuals or excerpts of published materials but you need to provide
references, think about the limits of fair use, and remember these do not count
toward the 1500 words you are generating). Remember, you do not need to be comprehensive in this work, but can focus your energy on issues that are important to you and your understanding of the work. You will still need to clarify the audience, but you can recognize that your contribution may just be one piece of a larger set of dramaturgical materials. What does that look like in specific terms? A discussion of the changes to Act III of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,
how acting styles might shape the experience of the play, what is
Memphis society in the time of the play, how is cancer diagnosed and
understood in the 1950s, what is the life of a longshoreman like, why is
a secretary seen as a desirable position in the world of a View from the Bridge,
why does Alfieri make reference to a Sicilian past, how does the
introduction of undocumented migrants create tension in a community in
the 1950s, how about in the present, Gibraltar:
what is the experience of a nude life model, what is the prevalence of
domestic violence in the context of divorce proceedings, how does art
therapy work for patients with Alzheimer’s, and any other example you
can think of that is interesting. The assignment will be
evaluated based on the successful creation of materials that engage the
audience you have designated in your background and context.Prose should
be designed for the audience, clear and accessible and well-edited.You
should assume the materials you present will be consumed in one of 3
ways 1) as part of a program passed out to all audience members; 2) as a
handout provided to a specific group of audience members, usually in an
educational context; 3) as materials posted on a website as part of the
support materials for a production. A close match between the goals and
the materials is important as is the specific engagement relative to
the play and the audience.Unique topics and innovative engagement may be
useful for more familiar plays. Possible topics could include Basic interpretation of elements of the play Background information about the author Clarification about historical and geographic context Explication of key terms or ideas Larger contexts for the work Production history Logic for design or directing choices Community resources Deeper scholarly understanding of issues addressed in the play
