CLIMATE CHANGE AND HEALTH COMMUNICATION ASSIGNMENT
This assignment is meant to be a creative undertaking that
gets you thinking about how to communicate health and
scientific information effectively to the public. You will
create a video, infographic, comic, song/poem/rap, tumblr
blog, vine series, Twitter treatise, or anything else you
can think of that can convey the seriousness of the topic
and motivate a response.
You will:
1) Clearly articulate your message and select your medium
for conveying it: saying, “climate change is bad for
your health!” is not enough. What can you say that
will jolt people out of complacency? We know that
global warming/climate change has both direct and
indirect health impacts and that the harm is
disproportionately experienced. What part of this
story do you want to highlight? What do you want your
audience to take away from seeing/reading/hearing your
piece? What do you want them to do?
2) Distill and assemble statistics and facts (from
legitimate governmental or peer-reviewed sources; aim
for at least 4 of these) onto/into an infographic,
short (1-2 min) video, or other creative medium, using
some nice visuals or other effects. For the print
option, you can type the text and draw or paste
visuals by hand, or generate the entire thing using
your masterful digital skills, putting it all on an 11
x 17 piece of paper (or thereabouts). You’re not
going to be judged for not being a master artist, but
do put some thought into the images and flow of
information. You can employ a serious (or humorous,
or ironic) tone – any approach you think will be
effective and suits the topic. Make it as compelling
as possible; you’re trying to get people to sit up,
take notice, and change their thinking and behavior in
some way (a difficult task in a world filled with a)
competing soundbytes and visual assaults, and b) a
bunch of stubborn humans who have a hard time changing
their behavior even under the best of conditions).
Offering some strategies, solutions, organizations, or
options for action at the conclusion of your piece
will help end it on a productive and hopeful note.
3) Submit your masterpiece in class or before class. If
you decide to go with the video option, you can either
send us a link to it (e.g., if you upload it to
YouTube), or give it to us on a USB (make it a nice
USB; I’d like to add to my collection) (kidding – we
will give the USB back to you ?). If it is something
we need to view on social media, come see Prof. Lewis
or one of the TAs to figure out a way to show us.
SCORING
Your infographic/video will be scored according to the
grading rubric below, and we will take your learning
reflection into consideration as well, so please take it
seriously.
