For this assignment, you will design a research study proposal to examine some aspect of human development. You may select any topic that is of interest to you, as long as it pertains to the life span. Refer to “Life-Span Development Resources,” for useful life-span websites if you are having difficulty selecting a topic.
Submit a proposal of 750 words in which you outline a study you would like to conduct. Proposals must include:
1 Specify a life-span topic.
2 Explain the topic you have selected and provide reasoning for the research study.
Study Design (e.g., correlation, experiment, quasiexperiment, etc.)
Briefly explain the design of the study you are proposing.
Explain the methods for conducting the experiment. Address the following question: How would you propose to study the selected topic, and what is the IV/DV, if applicable?
Describe in detail the timeframe for the study (e.g., longitudinal, cross-sectional, or mixed design).
Summarize your proposal succinctly.
Some helpful hints for Module 8’s Research assignment
Start off with an APA title page.
Always write papers in an essay paragraph form and do not complete them like you are filling out a worksheet.
On the first page of the paper after the title page you will start off your Essay with an informative introduction that sets this up for the reader (this is the area most students are missing out on points as they jump in and the reader is unclear as to what the purpose of the paper is). This should be a paragraph. Here you should be setting up for the reader that you will be designing a research study proposal to examine some aspect of human development (You may select any topic that is of interest to you, as long as it pertains to the life span. Refer to “Life-Span Development Resources,” for useful life-span websites if you are having difficulty selecting a topic.).
After your introduction paragraph you will then specify your life-span topic for the reader. The introduction of a proposal should begin with a statement of what is being proposed and should introduce the subject to a stranger. It should give enough background to enable an informed layman to place your particular research problem in a context of common knowledge and should show how its solution will advance the field or be important for some other work. The statement describes the significance of the problem(s), referring to appropriate studies or statistics. This is where you will have a stated hypothesis. A hypothesis is a tentative statement about the relationship between two or more variables. A hypothesis is a specific, testable prediction about what you expect to happen in your study. For example, a study designed to look at the relationship between sleep deprivation and test performance might have a hypothesis that states, “This study is designed to assess the hypothesis that sleep deprived people will perform worse on a test than individuals who are not sleep deprived.”
In your next paragraph, you will then discuss the background about your subject matter (here is where you would include outside sources in the paper and what is currently known about the subject. Your literature review should be selective and critical. Discuss the work done by others that give the reader a clear impression of how you will be building upon what has already been done and how your work differs from theirs.
In your next few paragraphs you will outline the project for the reader. Here you will:
In your final paragraph, you will summarize your proposal. A summary is not a rewrite of the original piece and does not have to be long nor should it be long. Use your own words to express briefly the main idea and relevant details of what you have written. Your purpose in writing the summary is to give the basic ideas of the original reading. What was it about and what did the author want to communicate?
Resources should include the textbook, the Lecture, and two outside scholarly sources (professional journals taken from the GCU library). Do not use websites as a source (this is a college course and college writing is expected) or dictionaries or encyclopedias (this was okay in high school but not college).
LIFE SPAN DEVELOPMENT
